He was the son of Walter de Gant and Maud of Brittany. An uncle, Robert de Gant, was Lord Chancellor for King Stephen.
While still fairly young, Gilbert fought on the side of king Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, where he was captured along with the king. He was then compelled to marry Rohese de Clare, daughter of Richard de Clare, 1st Earl of Hertford and Adeliza de Meschines, and a niece of Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester. In 1149 or 1150 the king made him Earl of Lincoln as a rival to William de Roumare, who had gone over to the side of Empress Matilda. He and Rohese had only one child, a daughter, Alice de Gant, who married Simon II de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton. He founded Rufford Abbey c. 1148 in Nottinghamshire, England."

Mr. Geist died Sunday evening in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he had been admitted one day earlier. He was in ill health since June 1985. Born in Rebuck Oct. 7, 1912, he was a son tf the late Wilson and Helen ( Koppenhaver) Geist. He was married in 1930 to the former Alma L. Straub. A retired farmer, he had also been an executive assistant of the Northumberland County Soil Conservation District, Sunbury, until he retired in 1978. He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ Church Leck Kill, where he had been a former church consistory member; St. John's Reformed Cemetery Association, Leck Kill; Eureka Lodge of IOOF of Leck Kill; and currently served as a board member of the Northumberland County Soil Conservation District, Sunbury. A daughter, Mildred Geist, died in 1932. In additon to his wife, he is survived by a son, Maynard L. of Leck Kill; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Adams of Rebuck, Mrs. Darlene Masser of Leck Kill and Mrs. G. Bonita Seaman of Lewisberry; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter."

She died from a recurrance of tuberculosis. John Hench Ritter was b. 3 Oct 1829. He d. 26 Sep 1908 in or near Loysville, Perry Co., Pa. He married Sarah Ann Baker (b. 17 Oct 1840, d. 11 Dec 1912, m. 27 Nov 1866). John was a farmer, inherited and occupied his father's farm near Loysville.
