He was born April 28, 1929, in Amity, Maine, a son of the late Justin and Marion (Getchell) Knapp. Lester graduated from the Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton, Maine, where he played football, and served as Class President for two years and on the Student Council for three years. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, having served on the USS Siboney, where he was in charge of launching target drones for Navy fighter pilots. After military service, Lester joined the Maine State Police and was a Trooper in Southern and Central Maine. After a career in law enforcement, Lester established himself as a businessman in Milo, Maine where he owned and operated Knapp Auto Sales and a grocery store which he supplied from his garden. He also built and managed the Knapp Trailer Park and built homes in the local area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy (Shirley) Knapp; mother-in-law, Gayle Shirley; sister, Betty Knapp; and son, Mark Knapp. He is survived by daughter, Cynthia and husband, Jeffrey Stanley; son, Steven and wife, Terry Knapp; grandsons, Michael and wife, Deidra Stanley, David and wife, Salena Stanley, Benjamin Knapp, and Lucas Knapp; granddaughter, Tamra Knapp and her partner, Thomas Flanagan, and son, Jack; great-grandsons, Kaine Stanley, and Benjamin "Benny" Knapp; great-granddaughters, Alexis Stanley, Arianna Knapp Flanagan, and Mia Knapp; brothers, Carroll and wife, Jan, Larry, and Gary; sisters, Mavis and husband, Earl Brown, and Sharon Knapp; as well as many nieces and nephews."
