[8703] John studied engineering in Chicago and graduated in 1926 from the University of PA School of Architecture. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He specialized in Early American Design and participated in restoration of nine buildings in Philadelphia's Independence National Park. He was an accomplished water color artist, with studio at Abington, PA.
[15831] Ancestral File (QKZF-KM) states that John is son of Ralph Butler of Tyes Hall, Cuckfield, Sussex. Ancestry.com offers: "Butler Name Meaning - English and Irish: from a word that originally denoted a wine steward, usually the chief servant of a medieval household, from Norman French butuiller (Old French bouteillier, Latin buticularius, from buticula 'bottle'). In the large households of royalty and the most powerful nobility, the title came to denote an officer of high rank and responsibility, only nominally concerned with the supply of wine, if at all. Anglicized form of French Boutilier."
[41264] The unverified Sargeant Famly Tree in Ancestry.com in 2016 offers: "Gottlieb Harriger was born in 1700 in Germany. He married Catherine Herger in 1720 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. . . . He died in 1755 in Montgomery, Pennsylvania, at the age of 55."

Hoyt's obituary (The Ellsworth American, 7 Aug 2003): "Hoyt Trafton Hutchins died on Aug. 2, 2003, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Dec. 24, 1919, to Lloyd Arthur and Marguerite Perkins Hutchins and was the eldest of four sons who were raised on a self-sustaining farm in Penobscot, a town where he lived most of his life. Unable to serve in World War II, he instead worked as a welder at Bath Iron Works for approximately four years. He first worked on completing its last two World War I Class Destroyers and later on its World War II Class Destroyers. Here he met and worked with a ship fitters helper, Pauline Elliott, whom he soon marrieda union which lasted more than 60 years, yielding three children: Marcia Joyce, Sherman Hoyt and Gertrude Nancy. Through Sherman and his wife, Patricia (Leach) are three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Sherman II and his wife, Rebecca (Cunningham) and their children, Erika Lynn and Julie Ann; Joyce Nancy and her husband, David Tarr and their children Ellenore Olivia and Grace Pauline; and Allison Harland and his wife, Stacey (Peasley) and their children Hoyt James and Cora Evangeline. Hoyt also worked a few years at Bowdoin College but returned to Penobscot to help with the family farm and to work with his Uncle Austin in the construction business, later establishing his own business. Since the early 60s, he devoted his time as caretaker of Nautilus Island and worked for the Wilson Museum in Castine. A project with which he was most pleased was the restoration of the John Perkins House, the only pre-Revolutionary War house remaining in Castine. This house was purchased in 1968 by the Wilson Museum and through the master craftsmanship of Hoyt, it was dismantled and reassembled on its present property. The John Perkins House was one of the first houses to be placed on the National Register. Hoyt also built the Museums Blacksmith Shop, Hearse House and exhibit areas in the lower rooms of the Museum. He was a longtime member of the Wilson Museum, serving as a trustee for 38 years and as treasurer for 17 of those years. He worked as the Museums blacksmith from 1969 to 1998. Hoyts love for history and his passion to preserve the past was the impetus that led to the establishment and restoration of the Conner Farm - headquarters of the Penobscot Historical Society. As Hoyt would say, "While resting, he worked in the woods, built several boats, many pieces of furniture and was an impeccable gardener, amply supplying fresh produce for anyone who stopped by. As much as Hoyt enjoyed his work, he more fully loved his family and friends. Hoyt was predeceased by his daughter, Gertrude Nancy; three brothers, Lloyd, Jr., Berwyn and Charles Hutchins; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Hutchins."
