[14668] The unverified Whitcomb/Wells Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2018 offers: When Foster Henry Whitcomb was born on May 12, 1826, in Vermont, his father, Cummings, was 26 and his mother, Arubah, was 23. He married Elizabeth Chase Field on June 1, 1854. They had six children in 19 years. He died on June 22, 1891, in Springfield, Vermont, at the age of 65. Elizabeth Chase Field was born on January 10, 1831, in Vermont. . . . She died on March 30, 1910, in Springfield, Vermont, having lived a long life of 79 years. "Springfield Reporter [Springfied, VT], 21 August 1891," p. 8: "FOSTER H. WHITCOMB. He was born in Springfield, May 12, 1826, and died June 22, 1891. The first eighteen years of his life were passed in his native town, gaining knowledge as many others have by a good deal oi experience and an occasional winter's term of school. The next two years were passed in Lexington, Mass., in working on a farm for one who was glad to employ the sturdy Vermont boy. From Lexington he went to Lowell, Mass., and served an apprenticeship of three years in the Lowell Machine shop. At that time, 1849, the gold fever was raging all over the country. He caught It and became a 'Forty-niner,' sailed around the 'Horn' and six months later landed in San Francisco. Here he went to work at his trade but soon, like all the rest, had to try his luck at mining. At the end of four years he returned to Springfield and through his after life he loved to tell and his near friends loved to hear him tell of what he saw and what he did in California, of the rough life in the mines, the excitement when gold was found, the pleasure ot hunting the big game of the Sierras, the panic-stricken days when the Asiatic cholera raged in the mining camps wnen he witn one other worked steadily in their little cabin making rough pine boxes in which many a poor miner found a hasty burial. In 1854 he returned to Lowell, taking with him as his wife Elizabeth Chase Field, a native of Springfield. There he was employed by the Lowell machine shop corporation for the next eleven years, most ol the time as a contractor. Always having a desire for a home of his own he decided In 1865 to [return to] his native town and settle down for the remainder of his days on a farm. He joined the Union Historical Society in 1887, had attended most ot the meetings since, and was much interested in the work. Again the Gate Keeper ot the Celestial Grand Lodge has been called upon to open wide the gate to admit another worthy brother. Foster H. Whitcomb has answered the last summons to appear and he judged according to the works done here below and to take his well earned reward. Among those present are many who knew him well and long. Some of you were his school mates and through a life-long friendship found him ever ready to do a kindness to those in need. Upright and honest in character, kindly, generous and social in nature, he won the love of many friends and the respect of all who were connected with him either socially or in business. He had no desire for political preferment yet performed the duties of the few public offices which he held in a manner creditable to nimselt and acceptable to the people whom he served. He was a loving husband and father, a kind, helpful neighbor and his loss is deeply felt both in his family and in the community."
