[4981] Roland was Constable of Scotland, 1189-1200. See "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 102. Find A Grave Memorial 64035675 offers: "Known as Lachlan or Lochlann in Gaelic as a youth, or Roland in French as an adult, Lord of Galloway. Roland was the son and successor of Uchtred, the Lord of eastern Galloway and Gunnilda, the daughter of Waltheof of Allerdale in Cumbria. Grandson of Fergus of Galloway and the daughter of King Henry Beauclerc of England. Lachlan married Helena, the daughter and heiress of Richard de Morville, Lord of Lauderdale and Cunningham. They had the five children, four of which reached adulthood: Alan of Galloway; Thomas, Earl of Atholl; Ada, wife of Walter Bisset of Aboyne; Devorgilla, wife of Nicholas Stuteville Brincklow. Roland's father was killed in 1174 as a result of the civil warring between King William I of Scotland supporting Prince Henry of England, Uchtred and his brother Gilbert supporting Prince Henry's father, Henry II. His uncle Gilbert Gillebrigte died in 1185, leaving Lachlan to fight for the lordship against both the claimants to Gilbert's line, Gille Patric and Henric Cennedig, as well as another warrior, Gille Coluim of Galloway. Lachlan successfully seized the Galloway lands, infuriating King Henry II, who had taken Gilbert's son and heir, Donnchad, to protect and guide for the day Donnchad would become lord of Galloway. Henry demanded that William I to subdue Lachlan, and while William and Lachlan were friends, Lachlan agreed to submit to Henry II when Henry brought his army to Carlisle to invade Galloway. As a result, Laclan kept most of Galloway as "Constable of the King of Scots" as a reflection of his devotion to William, while Donnchad ruled as the new "Mormaerdom" of Carrick. When Domnall mac Uileim attempted to claim the Scottish throne as a grandson of Donnchad II, Lachlan defeated him in 1187 at the Battle of Mam Garvia, which remains a mysterious location even to this day. Neither his father or grandfather would never have been as submissive to their kings as Lachlan was, welcoming foreign colonization of his lands. The Gaelic annals record him as having lost touch with his ancestry. Lachlan, now Roland, accompanied William I to pay homage to the new king of England, John Lackland. Roland had aims to lay claim to his wife's inheritances in Northampton but died during the trip, and was buried at the Abbey of Saint Andre."
