He adopted the fretty sable, (upper left square in red) for his coat-of-arms. It was the custom in those early days for the oldest son to place a canton in that position in his father's shield. William became Lord Haddon, although his seat may not have been Haddon Hall. He commanded a company of perhaps the first archers (Welsh) to be used in the Norman wars, and was later a travelling judge with County Geoffrey Plantagenet in Normandy, representing King Henry II. Sir William, Chief Justice, protected the estates and interests of his half-brother, Robert de Vernon, whose two sons, Richard and Robert, were banished for taking the wrong sides in the English-Norman wars. He also arranged the marriage of Robert's daughter to his own son, Richard."

'Adalberonem . . .episcopum, Fredericum et Herimannum comites, Godefridum atque Gozelonem' are named (in order) as the five sons of 'comiti Godefrido' and 'Mathildis Saxoniæ comitissa' in the'Gesta Episcoporum Virdunensium'. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names (in order) 'episcopum Virdunensem Alberonem, comitem Fridericum . . . comitem de Daburc Hermannum . . . et duos duces Godefridum et Gothelonem' as sons of 'Godefridi Ardennensis' and his wife Mechtild. 'Heinricus . . . Romanorum imperator augustus' confirmed the properties of the convent of St Vanne at Verdun, among which that donated by 'Gerardi comitis . . . [et] Rodulfi filii Rodulfi comitis . . .[et] comes Gotdefridus . . . et Herimannus comes in comitatu Bracbantinse…[et] frater eius dux Godefridus', and donated 'Mosomum' on the petition of 'Herimanni comitis' by charter dated 1015.
