[52815] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]." 31 January 2023: "Bar Harbor/The Villages, Fla. - Gary Pyne Adler, age 79, died unexpectedly with his children by his side on Jan. 24, 2023, while wintering in Florida. Whether you met Gary during his 30-plus years as a local shopkeeper, a retiree working at The Jackson Lab, or golfing on the many courses he enjoyed, you no doubt have a 'Gary story." The son of Harry and Barbara (Strout) Adler, Gary was born and raised in Bar Harbor. After high school, Gary attended a Boston trade school and later joined the Coast Guard. While stationed in Guam, he was called home to run the family business alongside his mother when his father fell ill. Back on the island, Gary reconnected with that 'pretty girl' who first caught his eye in high school, Elizabeth White, and they enjoyed a happy 40-year marriage. When not golfing, Gary loved watching the Celtics, puttering in the woods on his tractor, trying to outwit the deer in his garden, reading and shooting the breeze - often with a beer and cigar in hand. Gary is survived by his children, Karen Walsh and husband, Joe, of Shrewsbury, Mass., Janet Adler of Southwest Harbor, Brian Adler and wife, Cynthia, of Alexandria, Va., Brent Adler and his partner, Alexandra Hill, of Portland; brother, Philip Adler, and wife, Gail, of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; and his nieces, nephews and grandchildren. 'Grampy' lives on in the hearts of Megan, Tim, Claire, Emma, Sam and Penny. In addition to his parents and wife, Gary was predeceased by a son, David, and a brother, James (Paul)."

"The History of Martha's Vineyard...," Charles E. Banks (Edgartown, MA: Dukes Co. Historical Society, 1966), Vol. 3, p. 246ff. states it is likely that Henry is of the Luce family in the parish of Horton, Gloucestershire. He also reports "the traditional story that Henry Luce was a son of Israel Luce 'of Wales'" is supported by circumstantial evidence. Horton is only 16 miles from the Welsh border. Henry res. Scituate (1666), Rehoboth (1668), came to Tisbury ca. 1677 and d. between May 1687 and March 1689. He had 10 children, named by Banks (III:249).
"The American Descendants of Henry Luce of Martha's Vineyard," Martha J. Fletcher McCourt of Vanvouver, WA (revised, 1994)[ISBN 0-88082-040-3], I:16, states Henry was "born between 1640 & 1645 possibly in the Bristol area of England. ...no record of him exists until 1666 in America...his origins are still unproven. Some people believe he was of Welsh descent and his father was ISRAEL LUCE, who married REMEMBER MUNSON (per - L.D.S.Archive record...[unproven]). Some believe his line came from the Isle of Jersey; and others think his ancestors came from Normandy with WILLIAM the Conqueror. HENRY LUCE'S family was probably from Gloucestershire and the Bristol areas of England. He might have resided in Barnstable, but no records found. ...He married ca. 1666 in Scituate or Banstable, MA to REMEMBER LITCHFIELD...." As to the LUCE name being DeLUCE/DeLUCIE/DeLUZE, etc., Mrs. McCOURT agrees with Shorthouse's 'Hist. of English Surnames' which points out 'LUCE' was the plebeian (or yeoman & immigrant) form of the name; while LUCY or DeLUCY, the royal form of the same name. ...."
