[55166] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 17 November 2023: "Monticello - Rachel Sylvester Good died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on November 13, 2023, at age 81. Born with the gift of connecting with people of all ages, Rachel built her life on reaching out to others. To everyone who knew her, she was a loving life force. She was a sparkling beauty with a sharp wit. In her thoughtful and gentle way, she always took time to share a moment of friendly and caring conversation with anyone she encountered. Laughter, warmth and her beautiful smile graced us all. Born on April 6, 1942, in Houlton, Maine, to Erma Allen Sylvester and Fred Sylvester Jr., Rachel graduated from Houlton High School in the class of 1960 and began her studies in elementary education at University of Maine at Farmington, was a member of Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and finished her associate's degree at University of Maine at Presque Isle. During this time, Rachel fell in love with Tom Good, a Monticello boy, who won her heart at the Gentle Memorial Rec dances in Houlton. They married in August of 1963 and moved to their "honeymoon house" on Fletcher Road, where they began to build an extraordinary life and partnership. Their sixty year marriage was an example of diplomacy, patience and trust in one another. As the wife of a potato farmer, Rachel elevated everyone's spirits during the shared work of farming. She recruited and led crews of seed cutters, prepared endless delicious meals during spring planting and fall harvest. She worked laughing and talking of life, love and dreams during the long hours. Her butterscotch bottom rolls, strawberry shortcake, apple pies and homemade bread kept everyone in our family so very happy. In her husband, Tom's words, 'She protected and raised three beautiful children, and let me go to work to become a provider, farmer and a good father. We built our success together.' We remember her many lighted contributions to our lives, her commitment to family and friendship, and her dedication to being of service in support of her beloved Aroostook County community. Rachel was a passionate advocate for youth mentorship and community arts which included work as a founding board member of the Houlton High School Alumni Association's Dollars for Scholars and North Star News, a director of the Houlton Youth Center, a Girl Scout Troop leader, a board member of Visions Community Arts, a First Baptist Church Youth Fellowship Sunday School teacher, and a volunteer for the Meduxnekeag Canoe Race and Wellington School Ski Club. She served as a selectperson and head of the Recycling, Landfill and Solid Waste Committee for the Town of Monticello. Rachel is survived by her soulmate and husband, Thomas Lee Good, and their three children: Aimee Good, her husband, Joshua Margolis, and their daughter, Matilda; Eric Good and his wife, Lisa Good, and their children, Maxwell, Madeline, Tyler, Carter and Sydney; Paige (Good) Hilts and her husband, Thomas Hilts, and their sons, Atticus, Odin and Odysseus; along with great-grandchildren, Tanner Carmichael and Cooper Bartlett. She is also survived by her sister, Kimball Sylvester Rinfret (widow of Robert Rinfret); sister-in-law, Nancy Good Cayford and husband, Phillip Cayford; brother-in-law, Daniel Webb (widower of her sister-in-law, Joanne Good Webb). Rachel was predeceased by her dear parents, Erma and Fred; and her brother, Torrey Sylvester, who is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Fusedale) Sylvester; along with many beloved nieces and nephews, who considered Aunt Rachel their second mother. The Good family also shares its utmost gratitude to the incredible women - Jennifer (Trecartin) Smith, Debbie Upton, Amanda Folsom, and Suzette Holmes - who created a circle of care and friendship with Rachel as she courageously lived with Parkinson's Disease in the later part of her life. We also hold deep gratitude for her medical teams at Houlton Regional Hospital, Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital and Dr. Alexandra Degenhardt of Maine General Neurology."
