World Family Tree, Vol. 170, Tree 1765 lists Andreas b. in Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., PA, a "jointer (carpenter) and farmer" - and gives the parents shown in this database. WFT states that Andreas' wife was Elizabeth Dornmeier (b. 1766 in Macungie Twp., d. 1802 in Upper Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland Co., PA, m. in Longswamp Twp., Berks Co. in 1780 - daughter of Johan Martin Dornmeier [b. 1 Jan 1744 in Butten, Alsace, Germany, d. 11 Dec 1802 in Lowhill Twp., Lehigh Co., PA, arrived 15 Sept 1749 in the ship Phoenix, a Lutheran, served as a private in the 6th Co., 1st Bat. "Andrew is our direct ancestor. He joined the Continental Army in 1777 and served as a teamster in General Washington's army at the battle of the Brandywine. Despite the volunteer help of the Marquis de Lafayette and the Count Pulaski this battle was lost to the British. When it became evident that the tide of battle was going against the Continental Army Andrew cut his best horse loose and escaped capture. Since Valley Forge, where General Washington's Army spent the winter of 1777-1778 was only fifteen miles from the Geist home it seems probable that Andrew and his brothers Mathias and John wintered at home. Andrew bought his release from the Army and moved to Weisenberg Township in Northampton ?(now Lehigh)? County where he was a jointer and a farmer. He married a woman named Dornmeier, no known first name or dates, shortly after the Battle of Brandywine, by whom he had four children. The family, then consisting of Andrew, his wife and first two children, moved about 1788 to Northumberland County, traveling by foot and horseback. Their route was west from Weisenberg Township along the Tulpehocken Trail to Bethel Township, Berks County, then across the Blue Mountains in Pine Grove, north to Keffers, then northwest to the Valley View Gap and the Klingerstown Gap in Schuylkill County. At Klingerstown Gap they entered Northumberland County and turned north across the hill, settling family where Greenbrier, Northumberland County is now. Their first resting place in this, their future home, was under a large oak tree not much more than a half mile from an Indian hunting camp. They probably chose this spot because of the stream, Swabben Creek, the pleasant rolling country, the good hunting and the presence of other German settlers in the area. The Indians who were camped so close on their first days had a cemetery which later became part of Andrew's farm. Their first house was a log cabin equipped with ports through which the activities of the Indians could be watched and fired on, but Andrew made friends with them rather than fighting. They moved on to other areas not too many years later.
"Andrew was married twice, as noted above, and his second wife was Schneider, Marie Christina, daughter of Schneider, Johan Nicolaus. One of Andrew's granddaughters, reporting to A. F. Geist, the author of "The Geist Relation", stated that Andrew had twenty-one children in all, four by his first wife and the rest by his second, but four of them must have died very young since we have records of only seventeen. Andrew died on 19 Dec 1849, aged 94 years, 10 months, 23 days, and is buried in Himmel's Church, Rebuck, with his wives on either side of him. There is no stone for the first wife, but Marie Christina, born 8 Feb 1778 and died 12 Sep 1859, does have a stone that, like his, is inscribed in German.
"Andrew bought nearly three hundred acres of land in the Greenbrier area, 216 from Schlick, Adam and the rest from Miniam, Henry, both pieces in 1795. Both of these farms where originally patented by the Penns, and since the Colony of Pennsylvania no longer existed after the Revolution Andrew had trouble getting clear titles. He finally, in 1800, got a Patent Deed from Governor Thomas McKean, the second Governor of the Commonwealth.
"Himmel's Church was founded in 1772, and since there were a growing number of settlers in the area, as well as a new church, the officials in Philadelphia and Harrisburg decided to definitely locate and anme the locality. In order to do this an official party was send up from Susquehanna River to a certain big creek, now know as Mahantango Creek. From the river they followed this creek eastward until it made a bend through a gap in the mountains, now called Klingerstown Gap. From this bend in the creek they were directed to go north across the hills until they came to a section of the valley covered with nothing but green briers, thus the name Greenbrier. The briers were soon cleared and the land became excellent farms along the clear creek running through the middle this pleasant little valley. This creek was named Swaben Creek after the Swabian Tribe in Germany, from which many of the settlers descended.
"Father Andrew, as he was known, was the great-grandfather of A. F. Geist who labored so long and diligently on the compilation of 'The Geist Relation', and the granddaughter mentioned above was an aunt from whom he obtained much information."

Gibbs in Family Tree Maker Online (Genealogy.com) states that Ralph was b. between 1592 and 1609, possibly in Bradford, West Riding, Yorkshire, England, and d. between 4 May 1677 and 10 July 1678 in Roxbury, MA. Ancestry.com suggests the meaning of the surname (a varient of Hemingway): "English (Yorkshire): apparently a habitational name from a lost or unidentified minor place in West Yorkshire, probably in the parish of Halifax, to judge by the distribution of early occurrences of the surname."

"Notes for Ralph Hemenway: Unlike many American families of English origin all Hemenways and Hemingways in this country have a common ancestor in Ralph of Roxbury, Mass. The first US census taken in 1790 uses one spelling commonly in MA and in Connecticut the other spelling. Ralph Hemenway came to America during the period termed the "Great Migration". In 1630, Gov. John Winthrop b. 1583 d. Boston 1649 came to America. With him came a fleet of fifteen vessels bringing one thousand people and within ten years twenty thousand came. None could enter after gates were closed at sun down. A history of the first church of Roxbury 1630_1904 has been published. Ralph was a member as early as 1633, and was admitted a freeman September 3, 1634. He was a proprietor of the town. The oldest church in America still used as a "meeting house" is in Hingham, Mass. It has been said that most of the Hemingways in America descended from Ralph Hemingway who settled in Roxbury, MA about 1633. We have found that there were several Hemingways in England before America was colonized and it is hard to believe that only one made the voyage to America. It is known that some came in the nineteenth century. However the Hemingways in America may all share a common ancestry, not from Ralph Hemingway of Roxbury but from inhabitants of the old parish of Halifax, Yorkshire, some seven hundred years ago. Research of 15th century records shows the name Hemingway to be the most numerous in the Yorkshire area of England. Our genealogical researcher, Dr. Arlene Eakle, has been searching Yorkshire records back to 1309. Ralph Hemingway was not a name found in the Yorkshire area in the 1600's or before. The Yorkshire Hemingways were landowners who left wills and gave to charities. These are the records our researcher has found. Ralph is known to have been in Roxbury, MA in 1633. He married Elizabeth Hewes in Roxbury in June or July 1634 and was a freeman there in September 1634. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hewes and Mary Foote of Shelford, Essex, England. She had a brother, Joshua Hewes, who came to America and was a prominent man in Roxbury. Ralph and Elizabeth had seven children: Maria (1635_1635; Samuel (1636_1711); Ruth (1638_1686); John (1641_1724), as Elizabeth's father; Joshua (1634_1716), as Elizabeth's brother; Elizabeth (1645_1719), as herself; and Mary (1647_1653), as Elizabeth's mother. With the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th child being named from Elizabeth's family one might expect that the 1st and 2nd were named for Ralph's family. Could his father be Samuel? A Samuel was found in the Yorkshire records, but no proven connection to Ralph has been found. Ralph died in 1677 at Roxbury. Elizabeth died in Roxbury 2 February 1685/6 at age 82. Their son, Joshua, moved to Framingham, MA and their son Samuel went to Connecticut. Descendants of both Samuel and Joshua were involved in the development of MA and Connecticut colonies. There were numerous Hemingways and Hemenways active in the colonial period and in the American Revolution. The name was brought westward as the United States expanded inland. "The name is an exceedingly ancient and historic one. It appears in the oldest Germanic epic, Beowolf recording in the late 600's events of the early 500's in the history of the [unreadable] a southern Scandinavian people, the Geats, Beowulf's people, and of the 'Spear_Danes.' The Angles set down these tales of fellow_tribes, before they migrated to England, or very shortly thereafter. In Part II, 27, King Offa is called 'The Kingsman of Hemming' and 'The Song of Hemming' is mentioned.
