"Fairfield Sun Times [Fairfield, Montana], 6 May 2022":
Edson Brooks Blodgett, age 87, of West Brooksville, Maine was surrounded by his family in Great Falls, Montana "when his Lord called him to his home in eternity" on Friday, April 29, 2022.
He was born on April 4, 1935 in Castine, ME and was the eldest son of Howard Linwood Blodgett and Rowena Brooks (Wescott) Blodgett. Edson attended Brooksville Elementary School and Higgins Classical Institute in his latter high school years. He continued on to the University of Maine (Orono) for his Bachelors Degree in 1956 and received his Masters Degree from Baylor University in 1971. It was at the University of Maine where he met his wife, Sarah (Sally) Martha (Gay) Blodgett.
Shortly after joining the US Army in 1956, Edson and Sally married in Lexington, MA on December 29, 1956. His military career began in New Haven, CT and took him to Anchorage, AK, where the family experienced the 1964 9.2 magnitude Great Alaskan Earthquake on Good Friday and his sons first birthday. Their next stop was Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey; then to Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX, where he received his MHA in hospital administration; and on to Ft. Devens, MA for his first of two tours of duty there.
Edson spent 13 months at the 24th Med Evac Hospital, Long Binh, Vietnam where he closed down the hospital at the end of the Vietnam War. His next assignment took the family to Landstuhl Army Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, the largest American military hospital outside of the continental U.S. It was there he fell in love with volksmarching and continued with the sport upon his return to the U.S. with the goal of completing a volksmarch in each of the U.S. He returned to Ft. Devens, MA briefly and was then assigned to the Pentagon for a special assignment to study the effectiveness of women in the military in 1978. After 21 years of active duty, Edson retired as a Lt. Colonel and continued his public service with the Department of Defense (DoD) at the Pentagon where he worked to design and renovate medical clinics and hospitals for the US Armed Forces, most notably Brooke Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. After 20 years with the DoD, Edson moved into full retirement and returned to his hometown of Brooksville with Sally in 1999.
The next two decades of retirement were filled with many interests. Edson was an active member of Blue Hill Baptist Church where he served in a variety of roles. One special interest was his time spent working with the Brooksville Historical Society (BHS) serving in several board member capacities over the years. His historical interests combined with his genealogical interests as he worked to document the 54 public and private cemeteries throughout his hometown in Brooksville. During his tour of duty in Alaska, Edson learned to curl. He rekindled his love of the sport through the Belfast Curling Club and participated in numerous bonspiels, including tournaments on Grand Manan Island, Canada.
Edson was a census taker in 2000 and 2010 which introduced him to many of the islands off mid-coast Maine, as well as, a cadre of interesting characters who enjoyed their anonymity and could not care less about "being counted." On Veterans Day in November 2017, he was a recipient of a Quilt of Valor (QOV), www.QOVF.org, as part of Brooksvilles Bicentennial Celebration. Edson was also a dear friend of the Brooksville Elementary School where he was instrumental in developing an annual local historical competition between the towns of Brooksville, Castine and Penobscot known as Maja Trivia.
Living two doors down from the school, Edson invited the schools teachers to use and explore his woods with the children. His only requirement was that there were no rules for the kids while they explored, all reminiscent of his days spent exploring in the woods as a young boy. In between it all was lots of travel visiting family and dear friends along the east coast and the annual summer treks to Montana.
In November, 2018, Edson and Sally made the difficult decision to leave Brooksville and move nearer to their daughter, Gaye, in Fairfield, MT. From the coast of Maine to the eastern front of the Montana Rockies was an adjustment. At age 84, he learned about and helped out with many new things in his new surroundings to include cattle ranching (vaccinating, branding, cattle driving), flood irrigating crops (which he quickly determined was not for him), and continued his interest in historical events by becoming a member of The Fairfield Historical Society.
Edson loved to share his lifes experiences and stories with those who had an interest and an ear to listen. He reflected numerous times how wonderfully, abundantly and richly God had blessed him throughout his life with his wife, his children and grandchildren, and Gods provision for his every need. "Gods goodness" is immeasurable.
Edson is survived by his "wonderful wife and partner" of 65 years, Sarah (Sally); daughter, Gaye Brooks (Blodgett) McInerney (Tom) of Fairfield, MT; son, Scott Cameron Blodgett (Melissa Lynn Scott) of Sterling, VA; grandchildren Chandler Linwood Blodgett (US Navy) of Virginia Beach, VA and Mariah Leigh Alden, Greensboro, NC; brother, Denis Howard Blodgett of Brooksville, ME; sister-in-law Marjorie (Brogan) Blodgett of Easton, PA; nephew, Denis Howard Blodgett, Jr. of Easton, PA; niece Allyson Mary (Blodgett) Spegar (Tim) of Honeoye Falls, NY; sister-in-law Jacqueline (Gaucher) Gay (wife of brother-in-law, Donald Cameron Gay, who predeceased him in June 2015) of Fiskdale, MA; nieces Donna Gaucher Gay (Rick Cruickshank) of Mansfield, MA; Karen Gladding (Gay) Gaumond (Andre) of Brimfield, MA and Martha Cameron (Gay) Blodgett (Kenny) of Fiskdale, MA.
