"The Piscataquis Observer," 5 May 1932, p. 7: "Atkinson Loses a Prominent Citizen in the Death of Richard W. Kinney -
Richard W. Kinney who died very suddenly of heart trouble April 22 at his home in Atkinson was born in Greenfield, Carleton county, N. B., August 9 [sic], 1856, the son of John and Sarah Kinney. He was one of 13 children, the living ones being Mrs. Anna Crabtree of Milo, Mrs. Susan Walker of Gaastra, Mich., and Rev. C. A. Kinney of Dover-Foxcroft. Besides the above mentioned brother and sisters Mr. Kinney leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Cora (Smith) Kinney; three sons and three daughters, Beverly W. of Bradford, Paul R. and Wilbur A. of Atkinson, Mrs. Herbert C. Campbell of Barnard, Vt., Mrs. Henry Leavitt of Old Town, Mrs. Cecil Dority of Charleston; 20 grandchildren, and a very large number of nephews, nieces and other relatives. In early manhood Mr. Kinney went to Michigan, homesteaded a block of land and worked at the carpenter's trade, constructing several fine buildings. There he was married to Miss Cora Smith, a New Brunswick lady, and there the older of his children were born. In 1891 Mr. Kinney bought a farm in Aroostook county and there engaged in potato raising. In the fall of 1906 he sold this farm and moved to Atkinson where he bought the Eben Trask place which had since been his home. While in Michigan Mr. Kinney was converted and became a member of the Salvation Army. On arriving in Maine he joined the Baptist church of which he was a devoted member for a great many years. He not only carried on an extensive farming business, but being of a deeply religious nature he devoted considerable time to Christian work as a lay preacher. He was a member of the Pentecostal assembly and enjoyed a very large circle of friends who deeply regret his passing. Funeral services were held in the home, conducted by Rev. John W. Meisner of Milo. The bearers were Mr. Kinney's three sons and three sons-in-law. Burial was in the village cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft."
