[5181] He and wife are from correspondent George W. Archer, P.O.Box 6233, McLean, VA 22106, 1/91, reputedly from Gleason L. Archer's research. The marriage license issued by the Diocese of Hereford indicates that Henry is a husbandman (farmer) and owes the immense sum of 100 pounds to the Bishop. The Foreclosure Acts in the 18th century took away much of the farmers' lands and made them dependent upon the nobility (including Bishops); Henry's debt meant he essentially is bound to the Bishopric for life as most people did not earn even a pound a month. Henry signed the papers with an "X" (illiterate). Henry resided at Pontsbury, England. He and Mary also had William (b. spring 1754). He apparently had a twin brother, William, whose son William was born at Worthen in 1743 [see comment under parents]. For a line of descent see "Burke's American Families with British Ancestry: The Lineages of 1,600 Families of British Origin Now Resident in the United States of America," John Bernard Burke (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing, 2010), p. 2540.

[14271] Noted as son in father's will, he was under age 16 on Dec. 29, 1688. His brother Richard files in Prince George's Co. his administrators bond on his estate Sept. 30, 1703, indicating that Joseph was probably not married.

[18453] Mary and her descendants are as forwarded by Forrest D. Shade of California (see under Franklin M. Ritzman) who received the information from Roger Ralph Cramer (RogerCubs@aol.com). "The Standard [Lykens, Pennsylvania], 6 February 1903" p. 1: "Anna Mary, daughter of Jacob Ritzman and his wife Elizabeth, nee Matter, was born in Lykens township, Dauphin county, Pa., July 25th, 1820, and adopted into the family of God's saints on earth, through holy baptism, Sept. 2nd, 1820, the Rev. J. P. Schindel, a Lutheran clergyman, performing the ministerial act. The sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mardor. She personally and publicly accepted Christianity, ratified her baptismal covenant and was confirmed in the Lutheran doctrine, in 1835, by the same clergyman that baptized her. She was united in the holy estate of marriage with John Hartman of Lykens Valley, Nov. 22nd, 1840, by the same clergyman who baptized and confirmed her and who added to his signature on the certificate the words, 'Minister of the Gospel in the county of Northumberland, Pa.' Mr. and Mrs. Hartman began housekeeping on a farm about three miles below Gratz, near Hoffman's church, where they spent a quarter of a century. They moved but once, when in 1865 they went to Williamstown. There they were engaged in the butchering business, green groceries and lumbering for the mines. Mr. Hartman died Aug. 1st, 1894, and since then Mrs. Hartman's health has been failing. As long as she was able, until about four years ago, she was a regular attendant at church service. She had a cold for a week, early on Thursday morning it was discovered by the family that she was very short-breathed, she rested alternately on her lounge and rocking chair until 11 a. m. and then remained on the chair till 3 p. m., when her daughter, Elizabeth, assisted her to the bedroom, not thinking that her mother was sick and apt to die so suddenly. But the door was scarcely closed when a paralytic stroke had caused her to fall from her chair a corpse. She died in the Christian faith at about 3 p. m., Thursday, Jan. 29th, 1903, aged 82 years, 6 months and 4 days. Mrs. Hartman was the mother of nine children: Henry, deceased; Aaron, Steelton; Alfred, deceased; Jacob, Williamstown; Jonathan, Lykens; Elizabeth, at home; Charles, Tower City; and Solomon and Milton, both deceased. She also has 21 living grandchildren, 12 grandsons and 9 granddaughters, and 24 great-grandchildren."

[43] "History of Ashland Co., Ohio" (DAR Library) states she was b. 23 July 1832 in Holmes Co., OH. She and Samuel had, in addition to Henry H. and Martha A., John L. of Wooster, OH (m. Ella Raney), Isabelle (m. Luther Smith, r. Loudonville, OH) and George (r. Palmer, TX) - see obituary for Henry H. Maurer. The 1850 federal census of Montgomery Twp., Ashland Co., OH lists Mary Jane (age 17) in the household of George Stough (age 33, b. in PA, a farmer) and wife Catharine (age 30, b. in OH).
