"Johanson Family Tree-Roots . . . " in http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com in 2011 quotes David Edwards Thomas' web site "Alston Moor": "On February 7th 1334, Edward III confirmed the lordship of Alston Moor with Robert de Veteripont, for a fee of 20s. He also confirmed the protection for the Kings miners at Aldenston, granted at the miners request, because the original letters to the miners had been burned by the marauding Scots.
"On November 2nd 1337, Robert was granted a licence to empark his wood of Walnewood [Wanwood] provided that it did not encroach upon the Kings forest of Geltsdale. The name Park Fell has survived and it encompasses farms named Nether Park, High Park, Middle Park, Low Park and a copse called Park Grove.
"Although Robert de Veteripont was the Kings Sheriff of Alston Moor, the justice he carried out seems more akin to border law than to the Kings. In 1357, he, with others including his son William, and John Parnyng, the rector of Skelton broke into the house of one Nicholas Skelton, assaulted him, cut off his left foot, and through grief, caused the death of his wife and unborn baby. The reasons for this act of violence and any legal repercussions are not known.
"Edward III, in 1356, while he was present in the north to carry out another invasion of Scotland, reviewed the law in the area and commissioned an inquiry into the miners privileges. Their rights had been infringed by the bailiff of neighbouring Tynedale, which belonged to Edwards wife, Queen Phillipa. The commission greatly increased the privileges, including the right to prospect for lead wherever the miners chose, and affirmed their right to elect their own executive officials, but only in the main communities of miners. The King also whished to be informed as to whether Alston was in Cumberland or the Scottish Liberty of Tynedale. Even sixty years after its annexation by Edward I, there was still royal doubt as to the position of Alston Moor.
"Robert de Veteripont, Lord of the Manor, died in 1371, leaving two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Joan, as direct heiresses. He had outlived his eldest son Nicholas [the girls father] and his grandson, Nicholass son. Robert. The Manor could only be passed to male heirs. It went to John, Roberts third and youngest son. The second son William had died without issue before his father."

[5052] Patrick "swore fealty to Edward I of England, and was a steadfast adherent of the English interest, but his wife, Marjory Comyn, dau. of Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan, sided with the opposite party, and held the castle of Dunbar for Baliol, until forced to surrender it to Edward in 1296. In 1298, the Earl of March was appointed the King's Lieutenant in Scotland, and in 1300 was at the siege of Carlaverock. By Marjory, his wife, he had issue, Patrick, his heir; and George, ancestor of the family of Dunbar, of Mochrum, the direct line of which ended in the three daus. and co-heirs of Patrick Dunbar, of Mochrum, who all married Dunbars. Their uncle, the heir-male, was Cuthbert Dunbar, of Blantyre." - Burke's "Dormant...Peerages." [44678] The unverified file in 2018 at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shellhous-4 offers: "His surname appears in different forms, Shellhous, Shellhouse, Schellhous, Shelhouse, Schelhous, etc. Shellhous has been used because it was the name uploaded in WikiTree for his father. He was the son of Martin Shellhous (abt 1762-abt 1813) and Rosetta Alford (1765-abt 1832). He was married to his first cousin, his mother's niece, Rosetta Alford (abt 1797-1880). There are conflicting dates regarding their marriage date, one source gives 1822, another 1825. It has been estimated @ 1825 in Vermont, United States, based on the birth of their daughter Roxana around 1826. The marriage ended with her death in Nov 1879. He died several months later in May 1880. The only entry concerning their deaths located was for Roswell, but she appears in the image of the document, in the row before his. Her death occurred in Nov 1879 (the schedule was for the year beginning 01 June 1879 and ending 31 May 1880). She was 78, i.e., born around 1802. According to the 1860 census, Roswell and Rosetta had at least three children." This file contains his children and further information.
