Descendants of Samuel Corson (Colson) - compiled by Jack Colson: Generation No. 1: SAMUEL4 CORSON, (COLSON) (SAMUEL3, CORNELIUS2 COURSON(WHIT), JAN1 COURSON) was born November 02, 1719 in Dover, Strafford, NH (Source: (1) Vital Records of Dover, N.H. 1697 - 1850, Reprint of 1977, Pg. 23 ( Name spelled Corson), (2) Historical Collections of Dover, New Hampshire, Volume I, Pg. 23.), and died @ 1810 in Cherryfield, ME. He married MARY (MOLLY) GERRISH @ 1765 in Berwick, York, ME, daughter of TIMOTHY GERRISH and LYDIA GRAY. She was born July 26, 1748 in Berwick, York, ME (Baptised), and died Aft. 1810 in Cherryfield, ME. June 18, 1744 - The New Hampshire Revolutionary Rolls show a Samuel Corson to have been a member of a party "Scouting in the woods under Captain Timothy Robards, for ten days from June 18, 1744," at Rochester, New Hampshire. He was also in a scouting party at Rochester under Samuel Miller from June 29 to July 13, 1744. Additionally, Samuel is borne as a Sargeant on the muster roll of Captain James Guppy's company of twenty men who received allowance for services at Rochester in 1746. The possibility of his being a regular Professional Scout or Soldier could also explain his late-in-life marriage to a much younger wife. 1757 - Samuel Corson moved to Cherryfield, ME about 1757, and was one of the towns first settlers, along with Jabez Dorman, John Densmore, and Ichabod Willey. We begin to see the name changed on some records to "Colson" at this stage, for this lines descendants. December 04, 1770 - Samuel Corson, laborer, of Pleasant River (Addison), Lincoln, ME for a Debt of 75 pounds (money), 14 shillings, 9 pence, owed to Captain William Bucknam, gentleman, of Falmouth, Cumberland, ME turns over as Security his homeland, two oxen, two cows, two calves, and all his marsh lands, on the Promise that they be Bucknam's if the said Debt to Bucknam is not repaid in full within two years. Samuel signed with his "x" mark. The Deed was witnessed by Joseph Wilson, and a Benjamin (?). There was also 16 shillings, 6 pence, paid out to Bucknam at the time, perhaps Interest due. On August 19, 1771, Samuel Corson personally appeared and acknowledged the Instrument to Jonathan Bagley, J. P. The Deed was recorded on November 15, 1771. It is not known by this writer whether or not the Debt was ever paid off within the time period, or if the land reverted to Bucknam. (Lincoln Deeds - Vol. 8, Pg. 192 - 1770) (The Descendants of Cornelius Cursonwhit of Dover, NH, Vol. I, Pg. 156, by D. H. & S. D. Colson, 1991)(The Descendants of Cornelius Cursonwhit of Dover, NH, Vol. I, Pg. 168, by D. H. & S. D. Colson, 1991, - for photocopy of Promissory Deed) June 25, 1777 - Samuel Corson enlisted in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Lieutenant Thomas Parrat's Detachment, which was drafted from the Militia. Samuel served six (6) days at Machias, ME and was discharged on June 30, 1777. (MA Soldiers & Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Vol. IV, publ. Wright & Potter, Boston, MA)(The Descendants of Cornelius Cursonwhit of Dover, NH, Vol. I, Pg. 156, by D. H. & S. D. Colson, 1991) December 19, 1778 - Samuel Corson re-enlisted in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Lieutenant John Bohanon's Detachment, Colonel Foster's Lincoln County Regiment. The Detachmant was called out by order of Lieutenant Colonel Campbell in defense of the State stores on board the ship MERRYSHEET from Boston, which, according to the Roll dated at Narraguagus, was bound to the garrison at Machias. He was discharged on January 01, 1779, after fourteen (14) days service. (Massachusetts Soldiers & Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Vol. IV, publ. They asked that the government send armed vessels, and sufficient land troops for fortification, and some needed supplies, to protect land and inhabitants. (ME Hist. & Genealogical Recorder, Vols. After his death, his wife, Snnah, was appointed, on February 03, 1803, as the Administratrix of Samuel's estate by Stephen Jones, Probate Judge. The Bond Sureties were provided by Ichabod Willey, Sr. and Ichabod Willey, Jr., Snnah's father and brother. Josiah Harris, Registrar, examined the Petition. On the same day, a Warrant was issued to Joseph Wallis, Jr., Thomas Archibald, and Elijah Willis to inventory and appraise the estate. The Inventory was returned on February 24, 1803, and included, among other assets, 55 acres in Cherryfield along with a barn and house worth $600.00. On June 13, 1804, a list of accounts owed was provided by Snnah, signed at Columbia, ME. It provided for nursing, doctoring, and funeral expense for Samuel, and Nabby (Abigail), both deceased, for maintenance of Alexander until his death (he apparently was near death at that time), and allowance for Lucy during her sickness. (See below for Probate File)(The Descendants of Cornelius Cursonwhit of Dover, NH, Vol. II, Pg. 246, by D. H. & S. D. Colson, 1995) March 21, 1805 - Samuel's estate was apparently insolvent, for Sarah petitioned the Court to sell land, buildings, etc., because there was insufficient funds to pay the estate debt. Stephen Jones, Probate Judge, granted the request on the third Tuesday of August, 1804. The actual sale was announced on February 20, 1805, to be held on March 21, 1805, by the Administratrix, Snnah Corson, with 50 acres with house and barn to be sold with an incumbrance for the widow's Dower in effect. The land was sold to Snnah's brother, Ichabod Willey, Jr., for $221.20. When the transaction was recorded on June 11, 1807, Snnah had at that tiMEremarried to Samuel Kingsley, who was listed as Administrator in right of his wife, Snnah, who was Administratrix in her own right in the estate of Samuel Corson, Jr. (Washington Probate - Vol. 3, Pg. 219 - 1807)(Washington Deeds - Vol. 4, Pg. 541 - 1807)(The Descendants of Cornelius Cursonwhit of Dover, NH, Vol. II, Pg. 247, by D. The Deed was witnessed by John Black and Thomas Mills. The Deed was dated on July 09, 1807, and recorded on July 13, 1807. (Washington Deeds - Vol. 4, Pg. 540 - 1807)(THe Descendants of Cornelius Cursonwhit of Dover, NH, Vol. II, Pg. 247, by D. H. & S. D. Colson, 1995) Notes for SNNAH WILLEY: In the 1850 U. S. [2143] Gunhilda m. Sveyn I 'Forkbeard' Haraldsson, King of Denmark and England. http://www.guide2womenleaders.com/womeninpower/Womeninpower03.htm states "Dowager Queen Gunhild of Poland of Sweden - It is not known for certain that she was actually the wife of King Erik, who might have been married to Sigrid Storråda, but she might have acted as regent for son, king Olof Skötkonung. Since 996 she was possibly married to Svend Forkbeard king of Denmark and political active until their divorce in 1000. In 996 she lead to an alliance between Denmark and Sweden. Daughter of prince of Poland Mieszko I and Dobrawa, she was origianally named Princess Sygryda, mother of several children with both husbands, and lived (968/72-after 1014)." http://www.geocities.com/missourimule_2000/kingsofdenmark2.html reports: "Her Polish name was Sygryda Swietoslawa; we have used the Norse variation since it is the one most likely to be encountered. She is also believed to be the same person as Gunhilda, who is often listed as the wife of Sven I 'Forkbeard'. Also, her father is sometimes listed as Skoglar Toste, or the mythical 'Burislav'. Burislav is considered to be a combination of Miezko I and Boleslaw of Poland. After she divorced from Erik, she was given Gotaland as a fife. Olaf Trygvasson proposed to her, but demanded that she convert to Christianity. This proposal insulted her, and she began to actively orchestrate Olaf's downfall by allying Sweden and Denmark against Norway. She was successful when Olaf fell in the Battle of Swold in 1000. She also had Harald Grenske burned to death to discourage other petty kings from proposing to her, thus earning the nickname 'haughty'."
