[845] Encyclopaedia Britannica ('56, 13:640-1): John was b. in March, 1340; made Earl of Richmond 29 September 1342; knighted in 1355; became Earl of Lancaster in right of his first wife (Blanche, a cousin) in 1361 and created Duke in 1362; became King of Castile and Leon in right of his second wife (Constance); created Duke of Aquitaine by his nephew, Richard; buried near the high altar in St. Paul Cathedral, London. The titles he held included Duke of Lancaster, Earl of Derby, Lincoln and Leicester, Lord of Beaufort and Bergerac, Roche-sur-Yon, Noyen; Seneschal of England, Constable of Chester, and King of Castile. {See "John of Gaunt," S. Armitage Smith (London, 1904).} He was also the patron of Geoffrey Chaucer (author of The Canterbury Tales). "Royalty for Commoners", Roderick W. Stuart, 1992, 2nd edition, purports to list all known ancestors of John of Gaunt.
