[2604] Before 1045 he was appointed Earl of East Anglia; banished with brother to Ireland in 1051, but returned when father's banishment to Flanders ended in 1052; succeeded father in greater earldom of the West Saxons, 1053, hence becoming the chief man in the kingdom; succeeded Edward as king in January of 1066, but soon had to defend kingdom against Viking Harold Hardrada in the northeast and Duke William of Normandy in the south (whose army slayed Harold II on the hill of Senlac near Battle where Harold's two brothers also lay dead). {Ref. Encycl. Brit., 1956 ed., 11:212-3.} Harold II is second son of Godwin. He was buried at Pevensey Bay, but later his remains were moved to Waltham Abbey by Edith "Swan-neck."
