"My Maine Heritage: A Genealogy Web Site," Kathrine Cole Aydelott, Ph.D. (kaydelott@yahoo.com) - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com./~megen - provides his ancestry and offers:
From Plymouth, Massachusetts (1633):
Did not volunteer against Pequot Indians, but said he would go "if presst" (see Plymouth Colony book). First settler of Cole's Hill, Plymouth (the first burial ground of the Pilgrims), the area which includes Plymouth Rock.
Per Jim Cole via e-mail 6/4/01:
The earliest information obtained of James Cole whose name stands at the head of the family in America, dates from 1616, when he lived in Highgate, a suburb of London England. James opened the first tavern and Inn in the Plymouth Colony on a piece of land that is today known as Cole's Hill. It stands in front of Plymouth Rock overlooking the harbor. His lands extended to Swansea, Mass. There is a river there named Cole's River. It had formed a property boundary line, at one time. His descendants spread through out RI, MA, and to New Brunswick in 1763. His name appears in the tax list of Plymouth in 1634. (See Descendants of James Cole of Plymouth, 1633 by Ernest Byron Cole. A copy is now in the possession of James M. Cole b. 1950)
More about James Cole: Traveled and settled in Plymouth, Mass. Sold his Inn to his son James. James opened the 1st tavern / Inn at Plymouth, Mass. James is well documented in Plymouth Colony. He was by trade a Sailor, Inn Keeper and Owner, at Plymouth Mass.
Ref. Thomas Wainwright, Ed., Barnstaple Parish Register of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538 A.D. to 1812 A.D., Exeter, 1903, p. 21. See further information in "Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33."
For a discussion of James' ancestry, which is not proven, see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~megen/reunion/ps34/ps34_498.html. Ancestry.com offers: "Cole Name Meaning - English: from a Middle English pet form of Nicholas. English: from a Middle English personal name derived from the Old English byname Cola (from col '(char)coal', presumably denoting someone of swarthy appearance), or the Old Norse cognate Koli. Scottish and Irish: when not of English origin, this is a reduced and altered form of McCool. In some cases, particularly in New England, Cole is a translation of the French surname Charbonneau. Probably an Americanized spelling of German Kohl."

[25589] The LDS Church's unverified Ancestral File states that Elizabeth is daughter of Benjamin Miles (buried 12 June 1631 and of Ware). Ancestry.com offers: "Miles Name Meaning - English (of Norman origin): via Old French from the Germanic personal name Milo, of unknown etymology. The name was introduced to England by the Normans in the form Miles (oblique case Milon). In English documents of the Middle Ages the name sometimes appears in the Latinized form Milo (genitive Milonis), although the normal Middle English form was Mile, so the final -s must usually represent the possessive ending, i.e. 'son or servant of Mile'.English: patronymic from the medieval personal name Mihel, an Old French contracted form of Michael.English: occupational name for a servant or retainer, from Latin miles 'soldier', sometimes used as a technical term in this sense in medieval documents.Irish (County Mayo): when not the same as 1 or 3, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Maolmhuire, Myles being used as the English equivalent of the Gaelic personal name Maol Muire (see Mullery)."
