[5734] "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt.,1992) 224-29: "Earl of Buchan, Constable of Scotland, Justiciar...son of William Comyn and Margaret, Countess of Buchan." He and Elizabeth had Elizabeth Comyn, d. by 17 Feb 1329, m. Gilbert de Umfreville, Earl of Angus (b. 1244, d. by 13 Oct 1307), son of Gilbert de Umfreville and Maud, dau. of Malcolm, Earl of Angus. Cf. http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/earldoms/chapter2s1.htm which states: "Alexander, Earl of Buchan, was present at the great meeting of the Estates, held at Scone on the 5th of February, 1284, in which the Kings granddaughter, Margaret, the Maid of Norway, was declared to be heiress of the Crown of Scotland. On the death of Alexander III. in 1286, the Earl of Buchan was appointed one of the Guardians of Scotland for the districts on the north of the Forth: while John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, was elected one of the Guardians of the kingdom on the south of the Forth. At this time the Comyns were the most powerful family in Scotland. Buchanan says, in his History of Scotland, that 'the power of this family has never been equalled in Scotland, either before or since.'" Wikipedia offers: Geoffrey de Ridel (born in Withering, Northamptonshire; died 25 November 1120) was one of the many members of the English aristocracy who drowned in the famous 'White Ship' disaster. Among those lost was William, the only legitimate son of Henry I of England. De Ridel served in the high post of Lord Justiciary of England.
His parents were Geoffrey de Ridel of Blaye, Guienne, France & Unknown Bigod - said to be the sister of Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. His grandparents were Galfridus de Taillefer de Ridel - son of Geoffrey I de Taillefer 7th Count of Angouleme - and Agnes de Perigord. Geoffrey married Geva d'Avranches, who died after 1121. She was the daughter of Hugh d'Avranches Earl of Chester, Viscount d'Avranches and Marguerita de Roucy. All of these lines are of aristocratic descent.
Geoffrey de Ridel & his wife Geva had a daughter Maud de Ridel who married Richard de Basset, Justice of England of Drayton Basset, Staffordshire.
