He served as selectman for the town of Blue Hill for 11 years. He was active in the fraternal orders for more than 50 years. He was Past Master of Ira Berry Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a former member and Past Master of Halcyon Grange. He judged the horse races at the Blue Hill Fair for more than 50 years. Lawris was a life member of the Maine Trappers Association and the Union River Trappers Association. He hunted, fished and trapped all his life and loved to tell tall tales of his experiences of all the deer, bear and moose he bagged over the years or how many and how big the fish were. In 1995, Lawris was the oldest man in Maine to shoot a moose."
