"The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 23 February 2015":
Sullivan - Carle Gordon Gray died at the Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle on Feb. 20, 2015. He was born at his Pleasant Hill Farm, Sullivan, March 1, 1920, the only son of Linwood A. and Mary O. (Gordon) Gray.
He attended Sullivan High School until 1935 and graduated from Bangor High School in 1937, where he was a member of the student ROTC band. He studied piano with K.A. Ringwall and trombone with Benjamin T. Shaw at their Symphony House Studios, Bangor. In June 1941, Carle graduated from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance, Boston. He was first employed in the rail traffic department of the Charles M. Cox Co. at the Boston Grain and Flour Exchange. On Oct. 3, 1941, he married Charlotte Grindle, daughter of Merle B. (Sr.) and Ethel (Robbins) Grindle of South Blue Hill. Carle entered World War II military service Jan. 9, 1943. He was an officers pay clerk in the base finance office of the 56th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force at Halesworth and Boxted airfields, UK. But as he subsequently wrote, 'I never left the ground.' He was honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1945.
Carle and Charlotte returned to Maine and he was employed as a staff accountant for Horace A. Little, CPA, at Ellsworth. Carle earned his CPA certificate in 1952, and entered partnership with Little. He was a past member of the Maine Society and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He retired as senior partner of Gray, Horton & McFarland in 1986.
He served on the Ellsworth School Committee in the early 1960s and continued to have a lifelong interest in public school education.
Carle was a Freemason, a 68-year member of David A. Hooper Lodge at Sullivan. In the York Rite, he was a member and past high priest of Acadia Royal Arch Chapter and Blanquefort Commandery at Ellsworth and Bangor Council, R&S.M., and of Maine Council, Order of High Priesthood.
His lifelong passion was music. On a ride to Cherryfield one day, he recalled being invited as a guest trombonist by the Cherryfield Band for the dedication of the new bridge across the Narraguagus River in 1935. He was a charter member and past director of the Ellsworth City Band as well as member and director of the Anah Temple Shrine band. Later, he played with friends in the 'Brow of the Hill' dance band of Sorrento and several seasons at the Crocker House, Hancock Point, where he played 'pop piano' and penned in 2013:
The House Pianist
'Oh just play anything, anything,' they say. I know no song called
'Anything,' and had to move along. So I faked the old pop tune,
'Anytime'; two choruses would do.
Applause was less than warm, my tip bowl running dry. I took
no standing bow; no one seemed aware. So the music doesnt
matter, just play it long and loud.
Play, anything, anything at all!
