[49645] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]. 27 November 2021": "Jonesport - John W. Alley, 70, passed away at home Thursday, November 18, 2021, with his loving wife and daughter by his side. He was born May 17, 1951, in Jonesport to Ernestine (Bryant) and Leo Alley. John married his high school sweetheart, Laura (Pratt) in 1972. Together they had two children, Todd Michael Alley and Tricia Lynn Alley. John attended school in Jonesport and graduated in the first graduating class from Jonesport-Beals High School in 1969. After high school, John went on to further his education at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine where he earned his degree in 1973 in Marine Engineering. After graduation from Maine Maritime, John went to work at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut but soon decided he wanted to sail. He then went to work as an engineer on tugboats and worked his way up to being a chief engineer. In his 43 years of merchant marine life, John worked for IOTC (Interstate Ocean Transport Co.), Sonat Marine, Maritrans, K-Sea Towing, and Kirby before his retirement in November 2016. John loved his maritime life working on the Patriot, the Java Sea and the Mediterranean Sea over the years and made many good friends while out to sea! After John retired from his many years of shipping, he returned home to 26 Trynor Square in Jonesport, and his family full time. He spent his retirement following adventures of his grandchildren, attending music festivals with Laura, Tricia and Jim, and watching multiple sporting events on TV and in person, especially Todd's soccer boys (and girls) at JBHS. John was always extremely proud of his family and all that they accomplished along the way. He enjoyed his time with family talking sports and current events and especially loved to aggravate and then sit back and grin. John leaves behind his loving wife, Laura; his daughter, Tricia and son-in-law, Jimmie Neal; daughter-in-law Sandy (Farnsworth) Alley; two grandchildren, Travis Dwayne and Bayleigh Elizabeth, who always made Grampie Johnny proud; a special niece who was like another daughter, Amy, who Uncle Johnny always loving referred to as 'Amos Moses;' her husband, Shane; and son, Evan. John is also survived by his siblings, Carla Lougee of Vallejo, CA, Julian 'Dusty' (Mary) Alley of Addison, Cynthia (Dale) Kenney of Winterport, Dean (Teresa) Alley of Jonesport, Teressa (Phillip) Cultrera of Prospect Harbor, Jimmie Alley of Jonesport, and Tammy (Bruce) King of Sanford; and many nieces and nephews. 'Chief' will also be remembered by close friends and co-workers, Anthony Martin from Grantham, NC, and Ben Woods from Berwick; and very special neighbors, Bobbi Jo Dame, who Johnny loving referred to as 'my Bob' and her husband, Roger, who John loved like his own children. John was predeceased by his beloved son and best friend, Todd Michael Alley on September 16, 2021. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Dwayne; and baby brother, Joey; parents, Ernestine and Leo; in-laws, Frances and Malcolm Pratt; and a close friend and co-worker, George Marshall from Raleigh NC."

He leaves his wife, Martha; a son, John Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Canfield of Medina and Mrs. Eloise Olson of Rochester, O. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Grace Lutheran Church of which Mr. Buffington was a member. The church Pastor, the Rev. Carl H. Toelke, will officiate with burial in Copley Cemetery."

Elizabeth Downs died in Frankfort, now Winterport, in Waldo Co., ME. Ebenezer Downs is son of Thomas Down(e)s and Martha Wentworth. Jack Colson reports: "THOMAS2 DOWN(E)S, SERGEANT (THOMAS1) was born March 17, 1653/54 in Boston, MA, and died March 1710/11 in Kittery, ME. He married (1) MARTHA WENTWORTH Bef. 1678 in Dover, NH. She died July 26, 1691 in Dover, NH. He married (2) MARY LORD Aft. July 26, 1691 in Kittery, ME, daughter of NATHAN LORD and MARTHA EVERETT. She was born @ 1672 in Kittery and died July 26, 1696 in Dover, NH. He married (3) ABIGAIL ROBERTS October 24, 1698 in Dover, NH (Source: History of Dover, New Hampshire, by John Scales, 1923, Pg. 305.), daughter of JOHN ROBERTS and ABIGAIL NUTTER. She was born March 27, 1658 in Dover. 1706 - Thomas Downs, Jr., Sergeant, was elected Constable by the Town of Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire, in 1706. 1711 - Thomas Downs, Jr., along with three (3) others, was killed by Indians while working in a field at Kittery, ME. April 13, 1711 - Administration of his Estate was granted to his son, Gershom Downs (York County Probate - Vol. 7, Pg. 189). April 20, 1711 - Warrant of Appraisal of his Estate was granted Lieut. Tristram Heard, and Capt. John Tuttle (York County Probate - Vol. 3, Pg. 181). Thomas Downs owned 60 acres of land in Great Falls, NH (now called Somersworth, NH) - it was at Indigo Hill; there was a Saw Mill, and Grist Mill, just below the falls in Somersworth - in 1750, a son, Samuel Downs, owned this land - in 1900, A Mr. Morrill owned a part of it."

[31327] Richard arrived in New England in 1636. He m. in Springfield, MA 29 June 1643 Mary Winch (b. 1614 in Bocking, Co. Essex, England, d. 1682 in Dedham, MA). "New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial" by William Richard Cutter (1914) offers: "Richard Everett or Evred as the name was often spelled was born in England and came to this country it is believed with William Pynchon in whose employ he was for several years. He was one of the first settlers of Springfield in 1636 and August 16 1636 was one of the proprietors of Dedham, Massachusetts. He was a trader. He married June 29 1633 Mary Winch who came to New England at the age of fifteen in the ship Francis of Ipswich England in the family of Rowland Stebbins who settled at Dedham. Richard Everett was admitted to the Dedham church March 6 1646 and his children were baptized Alarch 13 1646. He was admitted a freeman May 6 1646. He was first on the tax list in 1648 and third in 1660 showing that he was a man of property. In 1650-51 he was highway surveyor, in 1650-51-52-53 constable, in 1650-51 selectman, and he served on many town committees. He died July 3 1682 and his will was dated May 12 1680."

[14464] http://www.masshist.org offers access to the papers of Samuel Whitcomb and reports: "Samuel Whitcomb was born in Hanover, Mass. on 14 Sept. 1792. He served in many careers throughout his life including bookseller, landowner, clerk, journalist, and education advocate. He began selling books in 1810 and served in this capacity until the 1820s. His bookselling career was interrupted only by service in the War of 1812. In 1817 Whitcomb married Mary Simmons Joy who traveled with Whitcomb as he sold subscriptions of Thomas Waits' publication, 'Publick Documents and State Papers'. While traveling throughout the Southern states and the Midwest (primarily Illinois), Whitcomb purchased land that he later rented through an agent for profit. Whitcomb originally settled in Cohassett and Dorchester, Mass. By 1825 he had obtained a position as a foreign entry clerk in the Boston Custom House. While working in Boston and living in Dorchester, Whitcomb became involved with various organizations such as the Dorchester Workingmen's Party, and served as its secretary from 1830-1832. As early as 1833 Whitcomb began pursuing work in Washington, D.C., and by 1837 became a revenue clerk in the U.S. Treasury. In 1845 while still living in Washington, D.C., Whitcomb worked as a correspondent for the 'Boston Journal'. He researched and wrote articles on politics and education, specifically advocating the high and graded school systems. His work for the 'Boston Journal' fostered his friendships with Edward Everett and Horace Mann. While in Washington, Whitcomb also worked for the Teachers Placement Agency, 1845-1849. As early as 1836 Whitcomb had purchased land in Springfield, Vt., but still spent most of his time in Washington. In 1850 he and Mary retired to their home in Vermont and there he pursued his personal interests in education, politics, religion, railroads, and canals; and assisted Vermont veterans of the War 1812 in obtaining bounty land from the government as payment for their service.
