INDEX

[5233] Jane came to America with her daughter, Joan, in 1635 on the ship "Planter." Paul M. Gifford offered on a RootsWeb.com message board in 1996: "Regarding Joan Arnold, who married Walter Antrobus and who was the mother of Joan Antrobus, who married (1) Thomas Lawrence and (2) John Tuttle: She was probably not the Joan, daughter of John Arnold, baptized in 1571. The will of John Arnolde, of St. Albans, Herts., dated 31 Oct. 1583, was proved 21Nov. 1583 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (15 Butts, FHL film 91965). In it he gives to eldest son George Arnold, seven houses in Dunstable; to younger son John Arnold his house in the Vintrye of St. Albans, and to John two silver spoons which his Uncles gave him at his christening, at 21; he gave legacies to elder daughter Mary Arnold, daughter Sara Arnold; to Emme Mannyngham 'my late wyves mother'; to my brother Hugh Arnolde; to my sister Joane 13s., 4d.; he mentioned 'cossen' Edward Gladwin, and his wife. Witnesses were Mr. Thomas Walley, Mr. Richarde Manningham, Thomas Appowell, Richard Graye and John Daye; Roger Williams was writer. The codicil says that Barnabie Lawrence shall keep the portion of my younger son John until he is 21, and that Lawrence was to bring up John. The Joan baptized in 1571 was probably a daughter who wasn't living in 1583. The St. Albans Abbey parish register shows the last child of Walter and Joan Antrobus as Henry, baptized 25 April 1600. Thus Joan was probably born closer to 1560. The same parish register gives the baptisms of Marie, dau. of John and Elizabeth Arnold, 5 May 1560; Sara, 7 Sept. 1567; Joan; and John, 6 Feb. 1574. It would appear that John Arnold was a much older brother of Joan, born perhaps about 1535. I don't know how much further traceable this line is, but I haven't yet looked at the St. Albans parish registers (the above dates are from the IGI). I looked at the index to Archdeaconry of St. Albans wills (which shows the 1625 wills of John and Judith Arnold of St. Albans), but don't recall when they begin. I don't think there are any earlier St. Albans Arnolds in the PCC. If anyone has looked at this further, I would be interested."

[51363] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 2 June 2015": "Penobscot - Susan A. (Dorr) Hatch, 61, went to be with her Lord and savior Jesus Christ, peacefully and unexpectedly, at her home on June 1, 2015. She was born July 23, 1953, in New Haven, Conn., to Gilbert and Elaine (Colson) Dorr. Sue lived in Killingworth, Conn., until she was 16 years old, when she moved to Penobscot and attended George Stevens Academy. There, she met her high school sweetheart, Robert Hatch, and they spent the next 42 years of their lives together, 'off and on,' as she liked to say. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Billy Dorr, and a beloved niece, Deena Lee Judkins. Sue was a woman of faith. She was proud, and lived her life from the heart. She never hesitated to share her opinion on anything, or anyone. She always rooted for the underdog, and if someone needed saving, she was the one to extend her hand. She was quick to anger, and even quicker to forgive. Her passion and love for her family made her a force to be reckoned with. Her greatest loves in life, besides her family, were her dogs, Maggie and Macy. The family camp was her favorite place to be, and she would start to plan the annual 'family camp weekend' months in advance. She is survived by Robert Hatch of Sedgwick; her son, Ed, and wife, Crystal, of Orland; her daughter, Frannie, and husband, Mike, of Bucksport; her '5Gbabes,' grandchildren, Cole, Naomi, Grace, Aiden and Camden. She also leaves her sisters, Sally Judkins and her husband, David, of Penobscot, and Cheryl Crawford, and her husband, Benny, of Castine, and several nieces and nephews. Her greatest accomplishments in life were attaining her high school diploma at the age of 26, opening her own business, Deena Lee's Variety in Ellsworth, from 1997-2001, and being a 'Mimi' to her five grandchildren. Her other passions in life included four-wheeling, feeding her birds, collecting salt and pepper shakers, and spending time at her beloved camp on Green Lake. She was an avid baker, and cook. Sue also had a passion for caring for the elderly and spent the last twelve years of her working life, caring for Barbara Stearns of Castine, who predeceased her in December 2013."

Major Joseph Goldthwaite, (fifth generation), the eldest of Joseph's children, was born in Boston, October 5, 1730. He entered the Boston Latin school in 1738, and probably commenced his military career, which he afterwards followed near the commencement of the French and Indian war, when about twenty-five years old. He married October 5, 1730, Hannah Bridgham, said to have been of Barre, Massachusetts.

In 1759 he appears as Major in the regiment from Boston under the command of Col. John Phillips, January 1, 1760 to January 10, 1761, on the roll of field and staff officers in Colonel Baglcy's regiment in service at Louisburg, in which he acted also as paymaster. He served during the campaign of 1762 as Lieut. Colonel of the regiment commanded by Colonel Richard Saltonstall, roll dated Boston, Feb. 19, 1763, in which he is called "of Roxbury." He was addressed at that time as colonel.

October 5, 1768, Joseph Goldthwaite was appointed as Commissary to the British troops who had been quartered in Boston on account of the resistance the inhabitants had shown to the custom officials. In Massachusetts Historical Society's collections, Vol. X, p. 121, is printed a list of the different nations of Indians that met Sir William Johnson at Niagara, July, 1764, to make peace in behalf of their tribes which was "inclosed in a letter from Colonel Joseph Goldthwaite of Boston, to Dr. Stiles, A. D. 1766."

Among the Goldthwaites who remained loyal to the crown, Major Joseph was one of the strongest. He was an Addresser of Hutchinson in 1775, and during the siege he passed the winter in Boston. At the evacuation he accompanied the British army to Halifax, and thence to Quebec. Nine days before his departure from Boston he wrote a letter to his uncle Ezekiel Goldthwaite, Esq., of Boston, acquainting him with his property and the household goods he had left behind. "In short, I leave behind me at least three thousand pounds sterling. You give the enclosed to my wife, if you can meet her. When I shall see her God only knows. Don't let her want for anything."

Some experiences of Major Joseph's wife, Mrs. Hannah, while her husband was shut up in Boston with the British army, appear in the Journal of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

August 4, 1775, Mrs. Goldthwaite with her sister-in-law and a Mrs. Chamberlain, left Boston with a horse and chaise and crossed the Winnisimmet Ferry. She was arrested and taken under guard to the general court at Watertown. It appeared on her examination that her health was impaired, and an order was passed to allow her to visit Stafford for the benefit of the waters there, but under the care of the Selectmen, and afterwards to retire to the house of her brother Joseph Bridgham at Rehoboth, and to be under the committee of correspondence. It was Colonel Loammi Baldwin who had them arrested and taken to Watertown and . . .
