[47734] John's World War I draft registration 12 September 1918 states he is janitor at the Springfield Twp. "Centre School" in Summit Co., OH. "The Akron Beacon Journal [Akon, Ohio], 13 February 1963," p. 47: "He was known as an dark gray hair, blue eyes and face to delight the children he Those who knew him at all called him "Johnny." Those who knew him well called him 'our beloved Johnny.' John C. Ritzman long had been marked for distinction in Akron's history books. He was one of the few in the City to live to see a school named in his honor. John C. Ritzman Elementary School is at 629 Canton rd. Mr. Ritzman died Tuesday in the Little Forest Nursing Home, surrendering to an illness that slowed him down for the first time in his life nearly two years ago. He was 88. During his lifetime, spent entirely in the Ellet area, Mr Ritzman was tapped for honor after honor, but probably the highest came after his death when a widely-known Akronite was moved to comment: 'All those things that every one said about him all those wonderful things.. .well, they meant them.' The red brick school building on Canton rd. was named for Mr. Ritzman in 1952 after he had known it intimately for some 70 years. Born in a section of Springfield Twp. that later was annexed to Akron and became a part of the Ellet area, Mr, Ritzman went through grade school in the original section of the Canton rd. school. He went on to Central High, but quit after just one day to help his mother, widowed when he was 9, on the family farm. Mr. Ritzman married Stella Spade and farmed in the same area until her death in 1909. While farming he was attendance or 'truant' officer for the Canton rd. school. He was elected to the Spring field Twp. Board of Education and served a year before the Board 'fired' him in 1914 and immediately hired him as its purchasing agent and maintenance engineer, putting in charge of 13 schools. He continued as custodian at the school, then known as Ellet High School, when it was annexed to the Akron system in 1930. Upon his retirement in 1944, the school's yearbook, the Elletian, was dedicated to 'our beloved Johnny in acknowledgement and grateful remembrance of his 30 years of faithful service to our school.' Mr. Ritzman often returned to the school after his retirement to talk with teachers and, especially, the children. Both student body and faculty made it a point to remember him on his birthdays. He was tremendously proud that the school, when changed to an elementary school, was named in his honor, When O. C. Hatton, then superintendent of schools, asked if he would accept the honor, he commented: 'What? Refuse an honor like that? Not me. I think it's a great honor. I got all my, knowledge bumps - the few I have - right there.' Mr. Ritzman once was president of the school custodians' organization and remained a member long after his retirement. He held a life membership in the Ritzman PTA. He was a member of the North Springfield United Presbyterian Church since 1895 and served as Sunday School superintendent, elder and trustee. Mr. Ritzman and his second wife, Elizabeth, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April. Before his illness, they lived at 2536 Leland av. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Haggerty of Norton; a son, John W. of Cuyahoga Falls; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren."
