Could John relate to the family documented in this parish record in Germany? - shared by Dale Bricker (dbricker@cyburban.com)via email in 2002: "I've seen at least one baptismal record for a child of Peter and Ottilia Brillhardt in the Protestant parish book of Rothau, Alsace in the 1720s. It says that they came from Bern Canton, in Switzerland, but I am having a hard time tracking down that surname as one with a Swiss origin.
"'Jean Pierre Brillhard, fils de Pierre Brillhard le cordonier, natif du Canton de Berne en Suisse, demeurant =E0 Rothau et Odille Verly sa femme, et venu au monde vendredi le 29 Novembre 1726 =E0 8 heures du matin, a =E9t=E9 batis=E9 le dimanche suivant, 1 Decembre de le Advent dans l'=E9glise de Rothau.
"'Ses parains ont =E9t=E9 Christian Tepp demeurant =E0 Rothau et Didier Verly de Belmont, oncle de 'enfant. La maraine fut Mareleine Coly, femme de Jean Stemply le cordonnier suisse, demeurant a Rothau.'
"The person who wrote the record was French-speaking even though the people involved were German-speaking. So 'Jean Pierre' was really 'Hans Peter', for example. 'Cordonier' means shoe-maker. 'Parain' means godfather, 'marraine' means godmother."
Frances T. Allison reports that John and Marie also had John Brillhard (b. 1721 in Holland, m. 1744 Susanna Derdorf) and Samuel (b. 1724 in Holland, m. 1743 Esther Smidt). - based on Family Tree Maker disc 5, pedigree 3478 and disc 13, pedigree 375.
