Geoffrey was made Bishop of Lincoln in 1173 (age 21); "but though he enjoyed the temporalities he was never consecrated and resigned the see, under papal pressure in 1182. He then became his father's chancellor, holding large and lucrative benefices in plurality. Richard nominated him archbishop of York in 1189, but he was not consecrated till 1191, or enthroned till 1194." He remained a supporter of his father; he led the clergy in the refusal to be subject to King John's taxation, and was forced into exile in 1207. {-"Encycl.Brit., '56, 10:134.}
Costain's "The Conquering Family" in connection with Henry II's long-term mistress Rosamonde Clifford says that when Henry came back and made the treaty of Wallingford he was by then married to Eleanor but nevertheless took up again with Rosamonde and "another son was born, who was named Geoffrey." Costain also adds biographical information: He was raised at court under the nose of Eleanor, who did not seem to object; he led the company that turned back the Young King's troops under Roger de Mowbray, who had invaded to try to seize lands promised by Henry. Costain recounts that in this connection Henry II said to Geoffrey "Thou art my true son (the others, they are the bastards)."
