He and his older brother, Alexander, Earl of Menteith, replaced their paternal Stewart surname in favour of Menteith, which earned him the nickname Fause (False) Menteith. John possessed the land of Ruskie, Stirlingshire, He was Governor of Dumbarton Castle, an appointment made by Edward I who was keen to secure the fortification as a major access route into Scotland by sea. Tradition has it that Menteith betrayed Sir William Wallace to English soldiers, which led to Wallace's death and his later nickname Fause Menteith ('Menteith the treacherous'). . . . The English chronicler Piers Langtoft states that Menteith discovered the retreat of Wallace through the treacherous information of Jack Short, his servant, and that he came under cover of night and seized him in bed. A passage in the Scala Chronica, quoted by John Leland, notes, 'William Wallace was taken of the Counte of Menteith, about Glasgow, and sent to King Edward, and after was hanged, drawn, and quartered at London.'
Menteith married Helena[citation needed], daughter of Gartnait, Earl of Mar, by whom he had two sons, Sir John de Menteith the younger and Walter, and one daughter known by name, Johanna. He was said to have had two other daughters."

The 1850 Census said his real estate was worth $10,000.
The Rev. David Myers was the (grand)son of Nicholas Myers, and bought the old Mitchell farm west of where his father lived (now John Musser). His children were Samuel, of Lewistown, Dr. Seth F., Mrs. G. W. McAlister and Mrs. Dr. A. J. Fisher.
In 1857 David Myers erected the store building on the corner where Isaac McAlister now has a store. It was the site of the first building in the town of Macalister, Pa.. The firm of D. Myers & Co. was composed of David Myers, Reuben Caveny and James M. Sellers. The firm had several changes, and, in 1862, the store was sold to Isaac McAlister, who now keeps it. [most likely this is son David Myers, not Rev. David Myers, since in the 1860 census, son David's occupation is merchant]
THE SOLDIERS' ORPHAN SCHOOL. -This institution was originated as an academy in 1855, the first trustees of which were H. T. McAlister, Wm. McMeen, Abraham Seiber, Montgomery Jameson, R. W. Jameson, Sam]. Watt and David Myers.
Ancestry.com has a picture of the front page of the family Bible inscribed by David giving it to son Seth. The same site also refers to him as a "Bishop."
from son Enoch's biographical sketch: "David and Elizabeth (Holtzopple) Myers, the parents of our subject, were likewise with their son natives of Juniata County, Pa., where they spent their entire lives, the mother dying in July, 1853, and the father in July, 1865."
