Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995):
George II (born 1683, ruled 1727-60). George II was, like his father, more interested in the affairs of Hanover than in Britain. He followed his father's example in staying away from Cabinet meetings. Government business was left to Walpole and later to other politicians after Walpole retired. Under the elder William Pitt, just as the reign was ending, Britain gained brilliant victories in the Seven Years' War. The Jacobite rebellion of 1745, an attempt to restore the Stuarts to the throne, proved unsuccessful.
George was passionately devoted to military matters. During his reign he fought the French at the battle of Dettingen in 1743, the last British king to appear on a battlefield.
The king's son and heir, Frederick Louis, died in 1751. When George himself died in 1760, his grandson became king. He was George III.

When in his teens, Samuel's family moved to Barnstable, Mass., 1639 - he remained there and was ordained a "teaching elder" (local minister) 15 April 1640. He became a fisherman and sailing master. Capt. Samuel Mayo was ordained a teaching elder (minister) on Apr. 15, 1640 at Barnstable, MA, but he was mostly a mariner. When his parents moved to Eastham, MA. in 1646, he stayed in Barnstable. He was captain of the ship "Desire" in 1650. Samuel took some settlers and their belongings to Oyster Bay, L.I., N.Y. in 1653. He moved to Boston, MA by 1658 and died within six years. Samuel's siblings are from Mariah Lawson and not verified.
[In 2003 Jean Mayo-Lakatos (mayolak@tampabay.rr.com) shared: It is my strong opinion that the Samuel Mayo(born ca. 1625), who was a passenger of the ship, "True Love", in 1635, that went from Gravesend, Kent, England to Bermuda, IS NOT the Samuel Mayo, son of Rev. John Mayo. After doing much research in Bermuda, Barbadoes, and even in Kent, England, everything points to the assumption that these two Samuel Mayo's are not the same person. The Bermuda Archives and other sources in Bermuda stated that the "True Love" was a "white slave" ship...or a ship of indentured servants whose indenture periods often lasted for 99 years. They stated that a boy of 10 years, even if he survived the voyage to Bermuda, would have had a strong likelihood of not living through his first year in Bermuda, as these children were often treated harshly, and even more so, if they dared to try to run away. I have found no record of Samuel Mayo after he landed in Bermuda. Several of the limited number of adults on the ship were active in the white slave trade and many of them owned slaves or indentured servants themselves, including Rev. John Oxenbridge, who was on the ship also. I am trying to locate the origins of Samuel Mayo of the "True Love" in London, or in Kent, England, but as of this date, I have been unable to locate information about Samuel nor about his family origins in Kent, England nor in London.
Capt. Samuel Mayo and his partners owned a ship called "Desire" and he brought some settlers and their belongings to Oyster Bay, L.I., NY, and in 1653 was associated with the Wright's, Dickinson's, and others in the purchase of Oyster, Bay, L.I. from the Indians...in particular, Asiapum. They were called joint purchasers. They gave the Indians 6 Indian coats, 6 kettles, 6 hoes, 6 hatchets, 3 pairs of stockings, 30 blades or heads for spears, 20, knives, 3 shirts, wampum, and black wampum...in exchange for the land. Anthony Wright and Capt. Samuel Mayo signed the agreement with the Indians.
The Dickinson's and Wright's settled there...and for a very short time, so did Samuel Mayo. He had 2 children born there in 1654 and 1656. His next child was born in Boston, MA. in 1658. Samuel had gone to live in Boston where his father was minister of the Second Church of Boston. Capt. Samuel Mayo died by April, 1664 in Boston. Anthony Wright made a conveyance of land which contained part of his "home lot" , and included some land purchased by him from the heirs of Samuel Mayo, one of the original settlers of 1653. The first mention in the records of the ownership by Anthony Wright of part of the "home lot "of Mayo, is shown in an appraisment of Mayo's estate dated June 3, 1671 (Town Records of Oyster Bay. Vol.1, p.63). Anthony Wright later deeded this property to his nephew, Job Wright. This information came from "The Wright Family of Oyster Bay, L.I." compiled by Howland Delano Perrine and from "Rev. John Mayo and His Descendants" by Jean Mayo Rodwick, published in 2001. What is really interesting is that my ancestor, Capt. Samuel Mayo (I am descended from his brother, Lt. John Mayo) brought my Dickinson and Wright ancestors from Cape Cod to Oyster Bay. Then he went back to Boston. My Mayo's went from Cape Cod to Bar Harbor, Maine to Houlton, Maine. My Wright's and Dickinson's went to Dutchess County, N.Y. to New Brunswick, Canada to Houlton, Maine. And in Houlton, Maine and just over the border in N.B., Canada, the descendants met up hundreds of years later and intermarried with each other! My Wright's and Dickinson's were early Quakers but eventually became Baptist. My Mayo's were Puritans and Congregationalists but eventually became Baptist. My Wright's and Dickinson's were Loyalists but my Mayo's were not. Funny how things work out...and it all goes to show that we are all related if we go back far enough!
