He removed to Rowan County, N.C., and eventually Camden, S.C., where he is said to have participated in the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780. He married Elizabeth Raymer in Maryland. She reportedly died at the Nolichunky Settlement in Greene County, Tennessee, where their son Nathan lived prior to moving to Indiana. He had fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain while living in Tennessee. Another son of James and Elizabeth Veatch, Isaac Veatch (25 Aug 1756-18 Aug 1780), died two days after the Battle of Camden, of wounds sustained in the battle. James Veatch lived two more months and died Oct. 29, 1780, also supposedly of wounds sustained in the battle. Gen. James Clifford Veatch, a great-grandson of James and grand-nephew of this Isaac Veatch, "was born near Elizabeth, Indiana, in 1819. His father Isaac Veatch was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1827-28. He died of cholera in July 1833. His grandfather Nathan Veatch fought in the American Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain as a lieutenant of Tennessee Volunteers. His great-grandfather James Veatch fought, was wounded, and died of his wounds in the American Revolution at the Battle of Camden." (ref., Wikipedia.)"
