Darling, 57, of 1873 Park Avenue West, a member of the Ontario Planning Commission, was dead on arrival at Mansfield General Hospital early this morning following a brief illness. Mr. Darling was born in Mansfield Feb. 16, 1913, and had lived here all his life. He was a retired agent for Western and Southern Life Insurance Co. and an agent with the Athey Realty Co. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, Venus Lodge No. 152, F and AM, Valley of Canton. AASR and Al Koran Shrine. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Mae Mowry Darling; one daughter, Mrs. Patricia K. Hagner of 1016 Linwood Place; one sister, Mrs. Grace Wheeler of Toledo; one half brother, Duane Darling of Mansfield; his step-mother, Mrs. Nona B. Darling of Lucas and one granddaughter."

He was born Sept. 28, 1936, the son of the late Roy and Harriet (Small) Willey of Cherryfield. He was an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired after 21 years with M.S.C. Department of Defense, U.S. Navy, six years with Master Mates and Pilots in Kuwait. He was a life member of VFW Post No. 11553 in Harrington, a life member of Disabled American Veterans, and member of the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent 21 Old Town. After sailing for many years, which was a great enjoyment for Gene, he was a master Maine guide, an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and trapping. He loved putting on his smelt shack with Richard and the Beal boys. He greatly enjoyed time spent with his youngest daughter Courtney, taking her to ball games, cheering practice, track and Destination Imagination. He is survived by his companion of 25 years, Patricia F. Grant, and their daughter, Courtney N. Willey; his daughters from a previous marriage, Jeannie Jamo and her husband, Steven, of Gouldsboro, Denise Grandy and family of Southington, Conn.; sons Roy Willey of Cherryfield, Jeff and his wife, Joan, and family of Cherryfield, and Scott and family of Steuben; a brother, Leonard, and a sister, Betty Look, both of Cherryfield, and a sister, Linda, of Massachusetts; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, David; brothers, George and Douglas; a sister, Lurline Reynolds, and a very special friend, Capt. John Williams."
