Don McArthur posted the following in 2001 in GenForum:
John Abernethy, Bishop of Caithness is of interest to some Rutherford researchers because of the marriage of his daughter, Barbara, to John, of Edgerston in 1643. Here's the section on him from the Fasti, Vol 2 page 125
1593 John Abernathy, son of Thomas A. of Glencorse, and Jean Straiton, one of the original students at the Univ. of Edinburgh under Rollock; M. A. (1587); reader in 1588; adm. min 7th Aug 1593. He was a member of assembly in 1601, 1602, 1608, and 1616. He signed the Protest against the introduction of Episcopacy 1st July 1606, yet when constant moderators were set up he accepted office for the Presb. of Jedburgh, though for two years his brethren refused to acknowledge him. In 1615 he solicited appointment to the Archbishopric of Glasgow; was made D. D., a member of the Court of High Commission, and promoted to the See of Caithness, 7th Dec 1616. It does not appear that he ever relinquished his charge at Jedbrugh (Dr. Hew Scott says he demitted before 15th Sept 1635), for in the articles given in to the Presb. against James Burnet in 1639, the parishioners complain of his [Burnet's] "informal entrie", he having procured "a presentation to a place which was not vacant, but served at the time by a worthier man, Mr. John Abernathy, who had neither demitted the, nor was deposed there from." By the Glasgow Assembly, 1638, A. was deprived of his bishopric, and he died in 1639. He marr. (1) (cont. dated 27 Apr 1600), Alison, dau. of Sir David HOME of Fishwick, governor of Dumbarton Castle, and had issue - John , M.D.; Andrew, depute-governor of Edinburgh Castle; Margaret (mar. -- Wauchope of Cakemuir; (2) Sir William Maxwell of Gribton); (2) (cont. dated 21st Aug 1606), Isabella, dau. of Patrick Murray of Philiphaugh, who survived him, and had issue - William, Min of Thurso; Anna (mar. James Murray of Overtoun); Agnes (mar. William Ker of Newton); Barbara (marr. John Rutherford of Edgerston); Elizabeth (marr. William Ker of Thankles); Katherine, died before 17th Mar 1640. [18848] Arrived on the ship ANNE in 1623 at Plymouth, MA. See notes for putative father, John. An unverified web site, http://www.thevalleyfamily.org, offers: "Shortly after the FORTUNE arrived at Plymouth in 1621, a shallop from the ship SPARROW, which Had arrive in Damaris Cove. In this little vessel were ten men, who came to select a site for another plantation; Phineas Pratt was one of them, Joshua Pratt, probably the brother of Phineas, and like him, unmarried, arrived at Plymouth in the ANNE in the summer of 1623. Most of those who came in this ship and in the LITTLE JAMES were friends and relatives of the Plymouth settlers. During the year 1623 there was a division of the land at Plymouth, under three groups: those who came in the MAY FLOWER, those who came in the FORTUNE, and those who came in the ANNE. As part of the last group, Phineas and Joshua received two acres. Since Phineas did not come by any of those vessels, the probability is that he was the brother of Joshua and put with that group to make the division complete. In 1624 the settlers of Plymouth were divided into twelve companies of thirteen persons each. Joshua and Phineas were assigned to Francis Cooke. He was appointed a surveyor on January 3, 1627, along with William Bradford, Edward Winslow, John Howland, Francis Cooke and Edward Bangs. He was mentioned in the cattle division of June 1, 1627, when he was a member of Francis Cooke's company which received "the least of the four black heifers came in the JACOB." He was a freeman at the time of the incorporation of Plymouth in 1633, and in April of that year he was foreman of the jury, as well as Constable in 1633, 1636, 1637. On December 4, 1638 he was again sworn in as Constable and the Court gave him the duties of measuring lands and the sealing of weights and measures. - Reference: Clemens, 176; NEHGR 9:314; Plymouith Colony Records, 1:3, 12, 105; Pratt, Simon Newcomb, "Founders of Early American Families", pamphlet, 1917, reprint 1938; MD 14:113, 18:56; Peirce's Colonial Lists; Goodwin, John, "The Pilgrim Republic",292-3; Rev.
