Daniel Kabel (Kable)

Interred Stone Church Cemetery, Kabletown, VA. Later removed to Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, WV. Daniel and his wife Mary Hartman Rice Kable died with 27 hours of each other.

In the Berks County, PA, Courthouse, there are records of four deeds of land in Caernarvon Township to Daniel Kabel, millwright, dated thus: March 30, 1799; December 31, 1799; April 19, 1802 and May 11, 1805. Mrs. Mary Alice Kable Rissler of Charles Town, WV, who provided most of the records of Daniel's descendents, stated that Daniel established a flour mill at Kabletown in 1806, but he is not listed there in the 1810 census, unless the name is badly misspelled. Only two young Cables, Jacob and George, were in Frederick County, VA, in 1810, which in later years became Jefferson County, WV. But this Jacob could have been the oldest son of Daniel, with his wife and two children under age 10. At the time of his marriage, Daniel lived at of near Morgantown in the southern tip of Berks County, PA. His wife was Mary Hartman Rice, the granddaughter of Johannes and Margaret Moses Hartman who arrived at Philadelphia from Weitenburg, Germany, August 15, 1750, on ship "Royal Union." See Rupp's Emigrants, page 229.

Descendants of Daniel Kable and Mary Hartman Rice are eligible for membership in Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution through Zachariah Rice and Johannes Hartman.

Robert Rissler, husband of Mary Alice Kable Rissler, was considered an authority on local history. A native of the Kabletown area and a relative of the Kable family, he was especially interested in that area of the county. The children of this couple provided some of their records and letters so that a more thorough search could be made for detailed information.

Since they told Hazel Zimmerman that Daniel Kable established a flour mill at what is now Kabletown in 1806, it is believed that the date is correct. Evidently Daniel was also instrumental in establishing other mills in the area as the village of Kabletown, as well as the largest district in the county, were named for him, by all accounts, according to records in the Jefferson County Court House.

Evidently Daniel didn't more permanently to this area until he bought land in 1814 as previously he gives his residence as Cumberland Co., PA. On August 11, 1814, he bought 27 acres from Daniel Musselman. This included tenements, hired tenement houses-waterways, courses, dams, races, etc., bordering the Bull Skin. Deed Book 8, pg 383. This 27 acres was listed as part of Avon Mill Tract. At this time there was no village of Kabletown nor a road. According to information handed down through the generations, Daniel lived in a lovely large home on what would be the left of the present road going down the hill through the village. Some remember being told that there was a fountain in the yard, others that there was a pond in the yard where fish were kept.

Daniel built a still along the Bullskin Run; being of German descent, it was as necessary to them as grist mills.

On December 15, 1815, Daniel purchased 92 1/2 acres of land east of the Shenandoah River from John Hopkins and his wife Cornelia. Deed Book 9, pg 377. It is interesting to note that Daniel's father Casper's Will was probated April 15, 1815; so Daniel had probably by this time inherited some property in PA. In time he further increased his land holdings in the area.

Daniel did not leave a will so his estate was divided among his 11 children. The itemized record of the public auction of Daniel's personal property is in Will Book 8 starting on pg 11 in the Jefferson County Court House. November 27 & 28, 1823.

Among items sold: bedsteads, bedding, trunnel bed, cot sheets, counterpanes, quilts, tables, tableclothes, lots of china, wine glasses, 5 1/2 dozen green edged plates, creamers, tumblers, tea cannisters, 10 Windsor chairs, other chairs, chests, decanters, bottles, pocket flashes (flasks ?) pocketbooks, clothes brushes, silk gloves, handkerchiefs, flag handkerchiefs, 21 shawls, men's and boys' hats, big horn bonnets, needles, buttons, bed ticking, check cloth, drab cloth, grey coating, bundle mohair, silk material, velvet, vest patterns, linen, dimity, coarse linen, calico, gingham, Irish linen, cambric, candle yarn, cotton yarn, 3 bottles of snuff, 5 lbs. Rapec snuff, 5 boxes antibilous pills, 3 lbs. ginger, 8 lbs. Hyson tea, 6 lbs. Imperial tea, 113 lbs. brown sugar, 2 10-plate stone skillets, stoves and pipes, pots and hooks, copper kettles, ovens, handsaws, ladders, shovels, Barshar wagon, shilling machine, grindstone, corn barrel, tin buckets, chart, 12 mill files, boot jack, rulers, compasses, shoemaker's rasps, other rasps, rat tail files, scissors, butcher knives, scales and weights, nails, whiskey bbls., crocks, saddles, meat tubs, sausage stuffer, saddle bags, 14 cowhides, 722 gal. why, brimstone, molasses, saltpeter, salts, Rosen, pepper and allspice, 2 stills and appurtenances - 1 still cap and worm, cows, horses, heifers, steer, horses, colt, horses with gear, pistol, paper, ink, ink stands, 50 cords wood Shannon Hill, 4 shares Carlisle Bank stock, 6 acres rye in ground--rye, corn. Among those buying at the wale were: Daniel Kable, John Kable, Wm. Castleman, John Johnston, John Locke, Dan McPherson, John Boon, John Hefflebower, Henry Roland, Nathaniel Craighill, Sam Hiedwold, James Hesket, Jonas Walraven, John Buchmaster, Joseph Roland, Barney Ott, Wm. West, James Ash, Joseph Myers, Capt Benj Beiler, Wm. Adams, Dolphin Drew, Parkinson Shepherd, Thomas Wyndham, and others.

THE KABLETOWN UNION CHURCH - On May 26, 1837, a deed was drawn up by Daniel Kable's heirs to convey one half an acre of land to trustees for $50. On this land a free house of worship was to be built for the use of all Evangelical Christians. Named to use this land as a house of worship were Methodist Episcopal, The Methodist Protestant, Presbyterian, Lutheran, the Baptist and Episcopal. The trustees named were John Locke, Garland Davis, John C. R. Taylor and George Rissler. Also provisions were stated as to how trustees would be replaced when one could no longer serve. The deed was signed by Daniel Kable Jr., John and Elizabeth Kable, William Kable, John and Eliza Chamberlain, Mary Heidwohl and Samuel Heidwohl. According to the deed, Daniel Kable Sr. was already buried on this plot which was the north corner of the Avon Mill lot that he had purchased from Daniel Musselman.

Earlier church historians have stated that there was a log cabin church on this site before the stone church was built. It is believed the log church was built about 1834 and the stone church about 1850. An earlier deed has not been found. Perhaps Daniel Kable had given the people the right to build a house of worship and bury their loved ones there but had not deeded the land. It is not surprising that only Evangelical Christians would be allowed to use this ground since these early immigrants had been driven from their homelands because of religious persecution and The Thirty-Years' War. Because this church was used by many denominations, you will find the Kable family belonging to different denominations mostly Presbyterians, Methodists, and Baptists. Although the early Kables were Lutherans, it is not known that Lutherans used that church.
