Ramiro pledged his infant daughter, Petronila I, to Raymond in order to save his kingdom from domination by the Leonese-Castilian monarchy. Raymond was very capable in military and political affairs, and was to assure that their progeny would reign jointly over the two states of Aragon and Catalonia.
