[47926] "Bangor Daily News, 7 October 2020": "Penobscot - Lloyd Burke Billings passed away on 9/30/2020. He was born on 4/4/36 in Ellsworth, the son of James and Margaret Billings of Blue Hill. After graduating from George Stevens Academy in 1954, Burke served in the US Air Force as a Radio Man at a rank of Airmen 1st class but had completed his boards and was eligible for promotion to Sergeant when his time was finished. After the Airforce, Burke had many interests where he put his talants to good use. He was involved in the design of the launch system for the trident missile and also helped to design a machine that folded and packed paper bags for shipping. Working under Robert Young in Charlottesville, VA, Burke became a draftsman for the Ker American mines in Blue Hill and also worked at the Black Hawk mine in Brooksville. One of Burke's career highlights was of running a small airport in Greenville where he earned his pilot's license and added the proud owner of a Cessna 172 to his resume. He spent many years surveying land in the area most notably and enjoyably with his nephew, Sage Collins. Burke also enjoyed his time fishing. He learned the art of lobstering and scalloping in Stonington as a stern man from his dear friends, Clayton Joyce, Donald McHenan, Cal Lawson and Butch Ciomei. He caught the bug and bought his own 42ft Bruno, The James Bay. (Which he loved). Captained and crewed by some of his best friends but most importantly, his 1st mate was his beloved and trusted son, Bill. During this time, one of Burke's favorite pastimes was encouraging and cheering on his youngest son, Robert, (Jeb) Billings in his multi-talented sports career at his alma mater, GSA. He also never missed the chance to be the biggest cheerleader for his daughters, Ruth and Sara. Burke was passionate about classical music, opera most especially. He even tried his hand at writing one, often picking up pen and paper when inspiration struck. His dear friend, Earl Leach, was writing the music for a special piece. Sadly Earl passed years ago leaving the opera unfinished. His mentor and a great friend in the arts was George Ortman. He encouraged Dad to express himself through art and they spent many evenings on George's back deck discussing their love of art as well as politics. Proof you can mutually disagree and admire at the same time. Burke is survived by his adoring wife, Jacqueline; children, Ruth (Billings) and Troy Tainter, William (Bill) and Amy Billings, Sara (Billings) and Rick Leighton, Robert (Jeb) and Chris Billings; stepchildren; David Black, and William, (Billy) and Joan Black; his beloved grandchildren, Erik Tainter, Victoria Church, Taylor Hodgkin, Sam Hodgkin, Virginia Gay, Margaret Brooks, Ricky Leighton, Cole Leighton, Hannah Billings, Jackson Billings, Matthew Billings, William (Billy) Billings, Kimberly Billings, Samantha Hawkins; great-grandchildren, Hunter Bessey, Hayden Gay, Elliot Harris, Skyler Hodgkin, Sarah Burrill, Madyson Burrill, Gabriel Mullin."
[51619] Sarah's grave marker names her Fannie S. Higgins. She is daughter of Reuben Billings (1811-1899) & Sarah W Clark (1816-1872; m. ca. 1838 on Mount Desert Island, Hancock Co., ME).
