[1486] Arnulf was preoccupied with fighting off the Northmen. "In his old age he placed the government in the hands of Baldwin, his son by Adela, daughter of the count of Vermandois, and the young man in a short reign did much for the commercial and industrial progress of the country, setting up the first weavers and fullers at Ghent, and instituting yearly fairs at Ypres, Bruges and other places. On Baldwin III's death in 961 the old count resumed control and spent the few remaining years of his life in securing the succession of his grandson Arnulf II...." {Encycl.Brit., 1956, 9:356} http://www3.sympatico.ca/robert.sewell/mathilda.html reports Arnulf I "waged a war in the late 930's against William Longsword, 2nd Duke of Normandy. Some sources state that a peace conference was held in December 942, and that Arnolph arranged for the murder of William Longsword at that time. Other sources state that 'Arnolph waged war against William of Normandy, whom he defeated and slew'." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnulf_I_of_Flanders.
