[14285] Thomas Hinckley was from Hawkhurst in Kent, England. He and his family arrived on the ship Hercules in 1635 and first settled in Scituate, but moved to Barnstable where he remained for the rest of his life. See NEHGR 2:194. Thomas first married (16 March 1660 at Barnstable) Mary Richards, then Mary [Smith] Glover (ca. 1650-1703) after Mary Richards's death. He had seventeen children. Thomas became Governor of the Plymouth Colony. See Hugh A. Johnson's "Hinckley Genealogy", Pope's "Pioneers of Mass." and James Savage's "Settlers of New England"(II:424). He owned much land in the Plymouth Colony and was an important political leader, serving as deputy, magistrate, assistant, deputy governor and as the last governor of the Colony for nearly ten years before it merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Also see Alicia Crane Williams' study project, "Early New England Families, 1641-1700" (Boston: NEHGS, 2018) - the two new sketches include Nathaniel Glover (m. 1653) and Mary (Smith)(Glover) Hinckley (m. 1653, 1659).
