[1220]

Tombstone states death date: 20 January 1830. John served in the British Army or Navy, 1775-79, deserting to the American side. {See "Ancestors and Descendants of Joshua Williams," by Gleason L. Archer (Boston, 1927), pp. 52-3; "Some Cherryfield Families," Bangor Historical Magazine, Vol. VII:177; "Descendants of John Archer of Cherryfield, Maine," Leroy Archer Campbell [1982].} He was an educated man - a land surveyor and a teacher. His residence was on the Beddington Road where they had at least 21 and perhaps 23 children. His grave is in the Archer Cemetery, Butler Road, Intervale, Cherryfield, ME. The name Archer is Norman and the family probably descends from Fulbert L'Archere and his son Robert who came to England with William the Conqueror and whose names are recorded at Battle Abbey. At the time of the American War for Independence the English head of the family was Lord Thomas Archer, Baron of Umberslade. John must have disgraced his noble relatives by deserting to the American cause; he was a Sergeant Major and chemist in charge of the gunpower laboratory in the little garrison at Machias, ME where he met and wooed Elizabeth Tupper. One report indicates that they resided for a while at Newburyport, MA, but later returned to eastern Maine where he helped survey an area into townships, settling at Cherryfield. NOTE: The President of The Archer Ass'n, George W. Archer, disputes the above claim that John was an educated man and employed at a British garrison at Machias, and that he ended his life at Cherryfield - see comments under wife Elizabeth - and states that John was a brick mason and farmer. [Note: Mark A. Honey reports the marriage date of John and Elizabeth as 18 Nov 1778. He also reports the names of many more children - and states that there were 21 children in all, including three who died as infants.] "Maine Place Names (Washington Co. and Hancock Co.)...," Ava H. Charbourne (Freeport, ME: Bond Wheelwright Co., 1957), p. 10, reports that Archer is one of the families in Columbia Falls, Washington Co., in 1790 and, p. 11, that "John Archer, a brick mason by trade, born in England and a Revolutionary soldier, took up a place, paying only five dollars for the making out of the title."

"Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 4,"Joseph Crook Anderson II and Louis Ware Thurston, editors (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1994), pp. 11-13 gives John and his family in detail and states that John m. and d. in Cherryfield, ME. 'Maine Place Names...Washington and Hancock Counties," Ava Harriet Chadbourne (Freeport, ME: Bond Wheelright Co., 1957), p. 11: "John Archer, a brick mason by trade, born in England and a Revolutionary Soldier, came to Columbia in 1789...."

Roxanne M. Wait [rwait@nemaine.com] shared in April 1999 via email: Gleason L. Archer -> "It stated on John Archer's tombstone, in the Archer burying grounds, in Cherryfield, that he was born in North Salop Co., England, March 26, 1752. Salop Co. is, of course Shropshire. There is some mystery as to John Archer's antecedents. He was evidently a very well educated man, probably university bred. I have a theory that he was a very near relative of Lord Thomas Archer, Baron of Umberslade which, I believe is located in Shropshire, near the Welsh Border. I once talked with an aged relative who claims to have seen a journal (later destroyed in a fire that burned the home of John Archer, Jr.) kept by John Archer when he lived in England, which stated that he was a tutor in the family of George III but, being very much opposed to the war with the English colonies in America, was kidnapped and sent over here to fight the Yankees."
(Soldiers and Sailors of the American Revolution - "It appears that John Archer enlisted as a private in the Artillery Company in Col. John Allen's regiment at Machias, 17 March 1778 and served until June of the same year when he was promoted to be Sargeant-Major of the artillery Company. His enlistment expired 15 January 1779. He re-enlisted as a private on the above date, continuing until 1 July 1779. He was again Sargeant-Major of Major O'Brian's rangers in Col. John Allen's regiment from 1 July 1779 to December of the same year. In all of the above service he was stationed in Machias, Maine. He next appears in Newbury, MA when he enlisted as a private for the term of six months from 5 June 1789. The following entry appears in the record as of that date: 'John Archer, age 28 years, Stature, five feet, 8 inches. Complexion, light. Residence, Newbury. Arrived at Springfield 14 June 1780. Marched to camp 14 July 1780 under the command of Capt. Hancock.' (He also appears on the list of soldiers for the six months at Camp Totaway, 25 October 1780. On payroll for six months during 1780 of Newbury. Finally discharged 5 December 1780.")[See "Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War - Maine," Carleton E. Fisher (Louisville, KY: NSSAR, 1982), p 18, which states he served as Sgt. in Col. Allan's regiment; also see MA S&S 1:287]
"Stephen D. Archer, a grandson living in Malden, MA wrote my father, John S. Archer in 1902 (Stephen then being 76) the following: John Archer, the first American Archer, was born in Shropshire, England, March 6, 1751-2. The story goes that one day while walking along the banks of the river when he was seized by a press gang, carried on board a ship and brought to this country, and forced into service. He was then about 23 years of age. He fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill and was one of the first three men to enter the redoubt. He then deserted the British service and we next hear of him at Cherryfield, Maine where he married and settled. We have been informed that he wad a man of superior education for the times and is supposed to have come from a family of means and some note in England but, owing to his desertion of the British Army it is through that he was ashamed to communicate with them."

From J. A. Milliken's "Narraguagus Valley" and volume 7, "Bangor Historical Magazine" p. 177: "John Archer, an Englishman, man of some education, teacher in his time, married a Tupper and at some early date in the settlement of the place (Cherryfield) took up the lot afterward occupied by his son John on the Beddington Road. They had a family of 23 children, mostly sons, most of whom grew to a man's estate."

Copy of statement by John Archer of his services in the Revolutionary War, when applying for a pension, April 15, 1818. The original document, procured from the pension agent, was in the possession of Gleason L. Archer, 20 Derne St., Boston, MA:
"Whereas, an act of Congress, passed in March last, for the purpose of compensating such persons as are needy and who served in the Revolutionary War to gain the independence of the country against the common enemy. Such claimants are required to furnish suitable evidence of their services by stating the the time and manner of entering the service, he line or station they served in and the time and manner of leaving the same. The subscriber hereof begs leave to submit the following statement of services performed by him to the consideration of the proper department. In the beginning of February 1778, I left St. John, New Brunswick in company with three others (now dead). Traveled twenty days on the desert shore without any other sustenance but clams of muscles and rockweed, until we came to St. Andrew's in Passamaquoddy Bay. There we met with Colonel John Allen, Lieutenant Louis Frederick Desdernier and others with a boat's crew on a visiting tour among the Indian tribes in Passamaquoddy. There we engaged with Colonel Allen to serve in the artillery company stationed at Machias; I was appointed Sargeant-Major when Captain M. Robbins, Lieutenant Mansell and lieutenant Asa Dyer arrived there with troops. On the 4th of July following, while celebrating the day, William Woodward, conductor of Artillery, standing at the muzzle of a four pounder, it accidentally fired and disabled him from further duty. Thereupon the commanding officer appointed me to take charge of the Laboratory, etc..., in addition to my other duties I continued to perform and do until Nov. the 29th day, of the year following. vix: A.D. seventeen hundred and seventy-nine at which time I obtained my discharge having served as the above specified from the latter end of February, 1778 to December 1st, 1779, making one year and nine months service."

My complete children's list came mostly from a book put together by the Cherryfield-Narraguagus Historical Society called "Early Pleasant River Families" published by Picton Press in 1997. The lenghty information on John Archer was recieved by Rolla Archer prior to his death by a Lucilla Archer, RFD Box 351, Newcastle, Maine 04553. She's where the information from the reference to the journal on came from. I've also been the the Intervale Cemetary on Butler Road in Cherryfield and got alot of my dates for John Archer's Children there. And to a small cemetary near the Blueberry Experimental Station in Jonesboro where Elizabeth Tupper, Lydia Gates Tenney, George Tenney, and David Cobb Archer, Jr. are buried. -Roxie Wait

This is the information I have compiled from the above sources on John Archer. I know that I have seen his name as a surveyor of lots in the early records of Lubec, ME but cannot find the reference at the moment. - Patricia McCurdy Townsend -- [http://members.tripod.com/~quoddybelle/index.html]

Dr. Gleason L. Archer, Dean of the Suffolk Law School in Boston, wrote 29 Nov 1949 to Vivian I. (Kennston) Conner that John Archer "came to America in the British Army, according to tradition, having been shanghaied by agents of King George III. He was reputed to have been a tutor in the Royal family but to have expressed his mind too freely on the iniquity of the American war. John Archer, however, said nothing about this (it came down by family tradition.) When I was a college student I talked with Stephen D. Archer, a grandson who gave me this information which I also heard from Mrs. Gus Archer in Clifton. John Archer's story shows that he and several others came down the coast from St. John's, New Brunswick in the dead of winter 1778. This must have been when they deserted from the British army. They travelled for a month along the shore living on mussels and sea weed, and finally reached Passamaquoddy Bay where they met an America expeditionary force under Colonel John Allan. They then enlisted in the Patriot army and John Archer was Sgt. Major in the garrison at Machias. He also had charge of the gun powder laboratory at that place. Here it was that he met Elizabeth Tupper, daughter of the Postmaster of Machias. After about two years service there he went to Massachusetts and again enlisted in the Patriot army from Newbury, Massachusetts. He served in various enlistments until the end of the war. Later he went back from Massachusetts to eastern Maine and became one of the land surveyors when they were laying out the eastern townships. He received a grant of land from the Government and was in one of the first settlements of Cherryfield.

"Historic homes and institutions and genealogical and personal memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts," Elllery Bicknell Crane, offers:
"John Archer, the immigrant ancestor of the Archer family of Milford, was the progenitor also of the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia families. He came to America during the French and Indian wars, 1757 1762, having been impressed in the British navy. He left the navy, perhaps deserted, as many of the British seamen who had been forced into the navy and army did. He settled at Cherryfield, Maine. He was well educated and found employment in his new home as teacher and land surveyor. He took up a lot afterward occupied by hs son John, situated on the Beddington road. He had a family of twenty-three children, most of whom grew to maturity. The youngest of the family, David Cobb Archer, who lived near Cherryfield, was well known to travellers in his day going from Columbia Falls to Jonesboro. John was a private in the artillery company, Colonel John Allen's regiment, in 1778-79. His captain was Thomas Robbins. The record also gives his rank as sergeant major. He was in Captain Jeremiah O'Brien's company of rangers, Colonel Allen's regiment, serving at Machias, Maine, late in 1779.
"John Archer married Elizabeth Gates Tupper, niece of General Gates, of the American army at Saratoga, etc., and grand daughter of Governor Mayhew. She was daughter of Peleg (born 1731) and Deborah (Fish) Tupper, born in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Children of Sergeant John and Elizabeth Archer were: William Gates, married a Miss Mullhall, of Liverpool, Nova Scotia,, and had two children: Henry and Elizabeth; Henry, Robert, John, Thomas, Thomas (sic), Joseph Tupper, of whom later; George, Allan, Mary, Eliakim, David Cobb."

Dorothy was a graduate of Brooksville High School, in which she received the Book of Etiquette upon graduation. Her favorite hobbies were: music, sewing, knitting and raising cocker spaniels. For many years she found great joy in operating the home of the friendliest cocker spaniels known as Oak Point Kennels. She had a passion for gardening - especially fruit trees, flowers and vegetables. Dorothy loved cooking, baking and serving others. Dorothy worked many jobs over the years. She worked at Hannaford Supermarkets, worked as a baker and worked for Coastal Agency, to name a few of her many 'jobs.' She studied real estate and earned her sales and broker’s license. She eventually opened her own real estate office - Oak Point Real Estate in Trenton. Dorothy never stopped learning and in retirement she got her CDL License. Dottie did a lot of public service. She helped build the Trenton School, was a selectman, assessor, served on the school board and was overseer of the poor for her beloved hometown. Dottie was a lady ahead of her time. Her work ethic was impeccable. She loved her husband, Edward, and their many adventures which included traveling, square dancing, and just being together. Her greatest joy was her children. She was proud of each of them for all their own unique talents. Dorothy had a love of Jesus and was a lifelong believer. Her spirituality always rested with the Holy Father. She neither held grudges nor dwelled on the past. Dottie was unable to work or enjoy her hobbies the last years of her life due to health issues; however, she was able to reside at home with loving care and support. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dorothy’s memory would be greatly appreciated to the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605. She is survived by her children, Constance Severence, Jan Michael Ryan, and Susan Waite; four stepchildren, Suzanne Cantnese and her family, Belinda Fletcher and her family, Martha Fleck, and Charles Bucklin and his family; 12 grandchildren, Patty Staples, Jan Rossi, Melanie Dutra, Shannon Ryan, William Ryan, Jeremy Ryan, Debbie Ryan, Todd Waite, Samantha Severence, Ashley Ryan, Mariah Ryan, and Christopher Ryan; 12 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Edward Bucklin. They were married on Feb. 20, 1970. She was also predeceased by her son Jeffrey Ryan; grandson Jessie Ryan; brothers Samuel Bunker and Larry Farrell; and stepsisters Norma Nixon and Fern Havey."
