He is quoted by Todd Groce, "Mountain Rebels," p. 73 (letter of 29 March 1862 while serving in Co. E., 59th Infantry Regiment, CSA - he was a Sgt. Major from 1862 til the end of the war). He attended Carson and Newman College, Jefferson City, TN. He and Mary also had three children who died young - Iola, John and Anderson.
