[1516] See http://www.mythopedia.info/ancestry-avesnes.htm (in 2003). John I was Count of Hainault, Namur and Royal Flanders. He is also known as Jean I de Hainault d'Avesnes. http://home.wxs.nl/~voort359/home3avesn.html reports "Jean was only about 5 years old when his mother Magaretha left her family to marry Willem (Guillaume) of Dampierre. She also had offspring from this second marriage, but since the validity of her first marriage was being disputed, the Avesnes and the Dampierre families fought bitterly over the right of succession for almost a century, not accepting the ruling by the King of France in 1246, repeated in 1256, that Flanders would go to the Dampierres and Hainaut to the Avesnes, which was in practice already the case." [Said to be "a friend a companion of William the Conqueror" - Collins, "Royal Ancestors...," p. 251.] http://www.heritagesites.eu.com/england/alnwick.htm offers in 2003: "Alnwick Castle was begun by Yvo de Vesci to defend the Border against raids from Scotland. However his successors often favoured the Scots. Eustace Fitzjohn supported King David at the Battle of the Standard and William de Vesci aided the Scots in 1174 when William the Lion invaded England and used Alnwick as a base. While most of the Kings army were looting the countryside, he was captured by English troops. After agreeing that Henry II was overlord of Scotland, he was released. Eustace de Vesci, married Margaret, a natural daughter of William the Lion. In 1297 the last male of the de Vesci family died and Alnwick was given to the Bishop of Durham. In 1309 the castle was purchased by Sir Henry Percy who became 1st Lord of Alnwick. His son, Henry, served Edward III in France and Scotland and fought with the Black Prince at Halidon Hill and Nevills Cross. His grandson, also called Henry, was created 1st Earl of Northumberland in 1377. The Percys, who became powerful leaders of the Northern Barons, prospered until 1572 when the 7th Earl, who had led the Rising of the North, was tried for treason and executed at York. The family subsequently regained the title and today Alnwick Castle is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland." http://www.fowberrytower.com/html/the_house.htm offers in 2003: "Yvo de Vesci (died 1134) was one of the Norman barons - the Conquerors chieftains - who became owner of Alnwick soon after 1096, and erected the earliest parts of the present Castle. The castle left the de Vesci family, sold to Henry, Lord Percy, on November 19th 1309.
