[55846] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 21 February 2024: "Delbert 'Del' D. Davis, 84, of Venice, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Born on March 30, 1939 in a schoolhouse in Etna, Maine to Lilly (Hudson) Davis and Daniel Denman Davis. He was fostered from young age by Millard and Audrey Smith of Newburgh, Maine. When Del was 17 years old, he joined the Army and served his country in the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged, he moved to Connecticut where he met his beautiful wife of 56 years, Anita (Galipeau), while roller skating. Del was a loving and devoted father to his and Anita's children, to many foster children, and to his grandchildren. Del was a self-described 'ol farm boy, and those roots were evident in Connecticut when he hand-dug a pond for his pet Canadian Geese, Honkie & Peeper, and also raised rabbits. Anita and him moved back up to Maine in 1986 and he happily had small farm with horses, goats, ducks, chickens, and fish in the pond. He would talk about that time in Maine being the best time of his life; a time when he 'had everything.' Del was always very industrious and owned his own side business working on small engines while he was a supervisor and mechanic at Currier Trucking. He continued to work until he was over 80 years old tending others lawns. Del leaves behind his three children, Jim Davis and his wife Denise of Bucksport, Maine, Wayne Davis of Beverly Hills, California, and adopted daughter Nancy Hamm and husband Michael of Venice, Florida, as well as his sister Effie, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many special nieces, nephews, and friends. Del was a father figure to many, and will be remembered for his wit and his willingness to help anywhere he could. He will be deeply missed by anyone who was fortunate enough to have him in their life."

"Physicians of Penobscot": Mrs. Sarah (Staples) Wardwell, of York,...acted as neighborhood physician, and practiced midwifery for many years before a regular physician was settled here. In this capacity was succeeded by Lucy Newberry of Vinal Haven." - "The Town Register, 1906," Brunswick, ME: H. E. Mitchell Co., 1906. [Sarah is not to be confused with the Sarah Staples who married John Snowman, q.v.] She may be the Sarah born 16 March 1737 at Falmouth (Portland) to Samuel Staples and wife Elizabeth per Falmouth, ME VR; if so, she is first cousin to Sarah Staples who married in 1754 John Snowman (q.v.). "Old Kittery and Her Families" (p. 755) lists Sarah's birth as 11 Sept 1731. R. C. Brooks in the STAPLES-L@rootsweb.com mailing list 1 May 2002 offered: "The root of the problem seems to have been Everett S. Stackpole, _Old Kittery And Her Families_ (Lewiston, Me: Lewiston Journal, 1903, reprinted numerous times), p.755, where he erroneously states that Sarah, dau. of Wm & Deborah (Jones) Staples, b. 11 Sep 1731, m. Daniel Wardwell of York. Pub. 24 Jan 1755. The Sarah Staples who married John Snowman (intentions York 14 Dec 1754, married 6 Jan 1755 by Rev Isaac Lyman) was conclusively proven to be the daughter of Wm & Deborah (Jones) by Howard Wescott's discovery of a deed dated 12 Sep 1808, wherein the widow Sarah Snowman of York and John Staples of Wells released land of their grandfather, John Jones, inherited through their mother Elizabeth, widow of William Staples and daughter of John Jones. (YorkDeeds, 69:39) The identity of the Sarah Staples who m. Daniel Wardwell (intentions York 24 Jan 1755) remains unproven; however.... C.S. Griffin published "Miles Staples's Descendents" in the Belfast ME _Republican Journal_, issue of 3 Oct 1889, p. 1, col. 6, which contained few dates and no source references. In the same newspaper, issue of 14 Nov 1889, p. 1, col. 1, he published corrections to the prior as the original account had missed the entire family of son Wm. S. Staples by his second wife. Almost as an afterthought he included a final paragraph, viz:-- "I have since learned also that Miles Staples had a sister, Sarah, born in York [sic], Me., April 4th, 1733, and married David [sic] Wardwell and died in Penobscot, Me., Sept. 23, 1817. She was the mother of Jeremiah Wardwell, who was born in York, Dec 19, 1756. This is the man J. Wardwell Staples was named for." I 'sic'd' the above in two places where he is in error. (1) On 4 April 1733 the family did not live in York but lived at Thompson's Point in Berwick. (2) The father of Jeremiah Wardwell was Daniel, not David. The mistranscription of Daniel=David or David=Daniel is one of the most common errors in transcriptions. Da_i_ is common and if the 'n' or 'v' is not clear, then the reading of the ending as "el" or "d" drives the transcription. In 1889, the typesetter probably was working from handwritten text in order to set his type. Miles Staples was the son of Hezekiah^3 (John^2, Peter^1) and Ann (Thompson) Staples. The parents married in Kittery on 22 Feb 1727/8 but the only record of the children is a single baptismal record. The record in the First Church of Berwick dated 6 May 1731 reads: "At a private meeting, Miles and Hezekiah sons of Hezekiah Staples were bap[tize]d. John Bennet owned ye Cov[anen]t and his daughter Jane was bap[tize]d. Also Olive daughter of Judith Hamilton & William son of Dan[ie]l Furbush." The prior entry was dated 2 May and next entry is dated 13 June 1731. May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and June 6 & 12 were Sundays that year. May 6th was a Thursday. A "private meeting" typically meant the preacher came to the house and there performed the baptism. This was frequently done when the person being baptized was nearing death. John Bennet's owning the covenant typically was an event which occured in the church; there fore I suspect that the John Bennet, et seq., events happened on a Sunday. Hezekiah Staples Jr. is normally given as being born ca 1734. This stems from a NH RevWar muster roll of Feb 1776 where his age is given as 42. Hezekiah Staples purchased from Daniel & Samuel Clark a 5-rod x 19-rod lot in York on the east side of the mouth of the Cape Neddick River on 17 Jan 1753 (YorkDeeds 30:134). I believe they built a house there and occupied it that summer. They certainly were there on 22 Jan 1756 when:'Hezekiah Staple, Cordwainer, Miles Staple, Mariner, and Hezekiah Staple Jr., Shipwright, all of York'' signed their bond to Daniel Clark in the amount of £80. (Maine State Archives, York ss Court of Common Pleas, April 1767, Clark vs Staples, loose papers). [None of the papers indicate the purpose of the loan.] This puts Hezekiah Staples' daughter Sarah & Daniel Wardwell in the same place as the marriage record. I believe that William Staples and Hezekiah Staples were the only two residents of York in 1755 who could have had daughters of marrying age. I do not consider C.S. Griffin's statement in an 1889 newspaper to be a reliable and creditable source. It certainly does not meet the scholarly requirements for genealogical 'proof' but all the circumstantial evidence indicates the possibility of truth as there is no conflict in the evidence. The inclusion of dates suggests someone had access to the Daniel Wardwell or Jeremiah Wardwell family Bible as Jeremiah's d.o.b. of 19 Dec 1756 is as recorded in the town records. Daniel Wardwell was born 17 Apr 1734 so he would have been a year younger than his wife, if she was born 4 Apr 1733. Don't get caught up in the current 'thinking' that Daniel Wardwell had three wives, viz:-- (1) Sarah Staples, (2) Mercy ----, (3) Sarah Staples. Examine all the Wardwell baptisms in the First Parish Church during the 1760s, looking especially at the name of the wife -- then look at the age of the minister -- then apply common sense."
