He was an Eagle Scout and his parents owned the local newspaper. He was a graduate of the University of Florida with honors in 1941, a member of Blue Key, Kappa Alpha and editor of the University of Florida newspaper. He was in the Army, 10th Mountain Division, achieved the rank of Major and served in northern Italy during WWII. After the war he worked at the Clearwater News and was the Commander of the local National Guard Reserve Unit. He married Gloria B. in 1948, and formed Smith-Sweger Construction Co. in 1948, sold the company and retired in 1977. Jack served as Chairman of the Board at Morton Plant Hospital from 1973-77, also the Board of Fortune Federal Savings and Loan from 1973-1982, where he became the Chairman of the Board in 1982 and retired in 1990. Also, he was a longtime Board Member of First National Bank, He was a member of Belleair Country Club and Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clearwater. His hobbies included golf, hunting, fishing, roque and tennis. He also enjoyed raising pure bred Red Angus cattle on his ranch, Hidden Valley Ranch in Brooksville, from 1971-1992. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; children, John, Terry, Linda and Robert; 7 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren."
