[46743] "The Perry County Times [New Bloomfield, PA] 22 December 1938," p. 1: "Clarence Herbert Swartz, a retired farmer, whose home is a mile south of Saville, committed suicide Monday at 9:30 a. m. at the home of a neighbor, Glenn Smith, where he had first gone into the house and after speaking to them a short time, went to their barn and in a small room or entry he shot himself in the head with a revolver which he had evidently hidden before leaving home. The County Coroner, Dr. J. E. Book, of Newport, who was summoned, after investigating, pronounced it a case of suicide, and said no inquest would be held. Mr. Swartz, who was aged 55 years, 5 months and 5 days, was a son of the late William T. and Mary Magdalene Swartz. He had been in ill health almost four years and worried over his failing health. He was a life-long member of the Reformed Church, at the time of death being a member of the Ickesburg Reformed Church, having held the offices of deacon, elder and treasurer, and was a director of the Ickesburg State Bank which closed its doors a number of years ago, and a member of the Masonic Lodge, New Bloomfield, and the Harrisburg Consistory. He was president of the Swartz reunion ever since its organization. Beside farming he was also engaged in the lumber business and his ill health caused retirement. His wife, Mrs. Ella Rice Swartz, died last May. Surviving him are his aged mother, and the following daughters and sons: Gladys, Mrs. George Moose, Andersonburg ; C. Harold, Loysville ; C. Leroy, Ickesburg ; Betty, Mrs. J. H. Snyder, R. N.; D. Jane and John William, at home, and three grandchildren." Clarence is son of William Theodore Swartz (1857-1922) & Mary Magdelene Swab (1862-1950).
