His marriage license application states he is son of Amos Bertsch (watch factory employee, b. in Allen Co., IN, r. Elgin, IL) and Mary Maller (b. in Wells Co., IN). "Bluffton News-Banner, 5 May 2005": "Former owner of Bertsch Jewelry Store in Bluffton, Sylvan Lee Bertsch, 83, died at his Bluffton residence at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2005. Born June 20, 1921, in Adams County to Amos and Mary Maller Bertsch, his marriage to the former Alice Ann Arnold took place April 22, 1944, in Bluffton. She survives. A watchmaker with the Elgin National Watch Co., he worked as a jeweler with Mosiman & Green in Bluffton before starting his own business in 1951. He retired after 40 years in 1991. His first shop was located on South Johnson St., but he moved to the northwest corner of Johnson and Market Sts. in 1971, where Daniel's Jewelry is currently located. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he served from January 1943 through November 1945 as a torpedoman aboard the U.S.S. Franklin, nicknamed 'Big Ben,' an Essex class carrier with the Halsey Task Force, that saw action in many Pacific battles. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 111. Additional survivors include a son, Dr. John D. Bertsch, Fort Wayne; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Susan) Flemming, Trumbull, Conn., Mrs. William (Carelyn) Calame, Lanoka Harbor, N.J., and Mary Bertsch, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Goldie) Stettner, Bluffton, and Mrs. William (LaVera) Roberts, Lakeland, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children who died as infants, a brother, Harry Bertsch, and a sister, Viola Friedman."

[8842] Wilbert is son of Oscar Gandy and Matilda Ott Hentry. "Wilbert M. Gandy, 82, Huntertown, a well-known building contractor of the Huntertown and Churubusco communities, died at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Hospital where he had submitted to major surgery twice during the past two weeks. He was a native of Noble County and was born on June 28, 1870. On November 26, 1898, he was united in marriage to the former Edith Stroh. For many years Mr. Gandy was a contractor and in late years he was the superintendent in charge of maintenance of the Irene Byron Sanatorium. He retired from active work at the sanatorium in the year 1947. Mr. Gandy was a member of the Huntertown Methodist Church. The surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Edith Gandy; one son, Robert Gandy, of Huntertown; one daughter, Mrs. Fred Dickes, Huntertown; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. One son, Forrest M. Gandy, has preceded him in death In 1920. The body has been removed to the Sonday Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 o'clock this evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Funeral Home. Committal services and burial will be in the Christian Chapel cemetery at Merriam."

When she turned 18 in 1653 she was the only woman on the list of lots of Martha's Vineyard divided up by the proprietors. As Dr. Charles Banks observed: "About four years later she surrendered her name to Thomas Daggett, but from subsequent views which we can obtain of her it was about the only thing she surrendered. It could be fairly stated that Thomas Daggett was merely the husband of Hannah Mayhew. She was the Governor's favorite daughter and she knew it."
She may have been a very early feminist. Over succeeding years 10 little Daggetts came along, but Hannah wasn't rocking the cradle all the time. Twenty real estate transactions are of record under her name and she did the business herself. This was unusual at the time and it appears to have caused some strain in a marriage where the woman refused to be known merely as the 'wife of Thomas Daggett.' Towards the end of the old Governor's life the son-in-law evidently attempted to exercise some control over his wife's business, forcing the Governor in 1679 to extract a "promise" from Thomas not to do so, referring to that promise in his will: "My son Daggett hath given a note under his hand not to meddle with aught (of Hannah's property)"
That she was the 'Deputy Governor" of Martha's Vineyard it seems that she was bound and determined to maintain the control that her father had placed and maintained on the little island. Following about 1660 the Governor had increased resistance to his little autocracy, and his daughter. She evidently carried on the good fight for him, for in 1675, in a letter to the Governor of New York explaining some of the problems the people were having with Governor Mayhew Simon Athearn wrote "Thomas Dagget's wife, Mr. Mayhew's daughter (which woman the people of Martins Vineyard very generally call the deputy governor...". This was towards the end of the governor's life, he was still well in hand of the government of the island, but as Banks writes, "All this while Thomas Daggett had been holding the office of assistant to the Governor, and theoretically 'rulling the land' but no one can have any illusions as to the real 'power behind the throne'".
When the governor finally died and his grandson Matthew took over the duties of governor, Hannah's contributions to the life of Martha's Vineyard drop out of the record books. It's possible that she prudently stepped aside for a nephew who didn't want her meddling, or she continued to 'rule' behind the scenes. We'll never know. She remained a widow for 10 years after her husband's death in 1691 whereupon, at the age of 70, she remarried to Samuel Smith of Edgertown and lived another 10 years.
Hannah married Thomas DOGGETT, son of John DOGGETT and Alice BROTHERTON, on 23 Sep 1657 in Edgarton, Dukes Co., MA. (Thomas DOGGETT was born about 1630 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA, died on 18 Aug 1692 in Edgarton, Dukes Co., MA and was buried in Firstburial Grnd, Marshfield.) Hannah next married Samuel SMITH after 1691.

He had [at least] one son with Elizabeth Alice Goodrich in 1512. He died on August 30, 1558, in his hometown at the age of 74. . . Elizabeth Alice Goodrich was born in 1488 in Warwickshire, England. . . . She died in 1572 in Stourton, Warwickshire, England, having lived a long life of 84 years.
