[55538] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 20 August 1927, p. 5: "Stockton Springs, Aug. 19 - Mrs. Mary Berry Wardwell, wife of the widely known marine architect, John J. Wardwell, died early Thursday morning at her home in Rockland, according to word received by her sister, Miss Nellie Berry of this town. In indifferent health for many yeans, the end came as the result of an infection of the foot. Mr. Wardwell started his ship designing career in this town, where Mrs. Wardwell was born 72 years ago, a daughter of the late Capt. Emery and Nancy (Ellis) Berry. Besides her husband she leaves two sons, Libbeus and David, and three daughters, Mrs. Ellie Chandler of Camden, widow of the late L. M. Chandler, Faustina, wife of Fessenden Miller of Camden, and Lizzie, wife of Clifford Hamilton of Rockland. Of her parents' family, Miss Nellie Berry of this town and Josiah Berry of Rockland, also survive."

[32030] Ancestry.com offers: "Woodruff Name Meaning - English: topographic name for someone who lived on a patch of land where woodruff grew, Old English wudurofe (a compound of wudu 'wood' with a second element of unknown origin). The leaves of the plant have a sweet smell and the surname may also have been a nickname for one who used it as a perfume, or perhaps an ironical nickname for a malodorous person."
