I live in Marshfield, MA in a house that was built in 1650 by one John Phillips. Now John had a wife Mary and 4 children. Three sons and a daughter. John had not come on the Mayflower. However, John's wife Mary died and he married as a 2nd wife Grace Holloway who was the widow of Mayflower Pilgrim William Holloway. Then lightning hit my house (1666) and killed Grace and two others, and John married as a 3rd wife Faith Clark Doty who was not only a Mayflower person herself, (daughter of Tristam and Faith Clark) but was the widow of Edward Doty. John did not have much luck with wives and Faith also pre-deceased him, and he married a 4th wife, a widow from Scituate, MA. Benjamin also m. Harriet J. Davis (b. ca. 1821, d. 1901 in Mason, IA) - see his obituary in the Warsaw Daily Times (Indiana). Information at hand does not clearly state which of his two wives is mother of the children. An ordained Methodist Episcopal minister, he later became a physician. He was involved in the "Underground Railroad." See Brian P. Hogan's web site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9164/d179.htm#P465
"Benjamin was only a small child when his parents moved from Pennsylvania to Wayne County, Ohio. At 16, he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church under H. A. Sheldon. At 18 he was licensed as an exhorter (preach in his own church). Two years later he was licensed to preach as an itinerant preacher on the Wyandot Circuit, and the next year on the Norwalk Circuit. At that time (1829), these circuit comprised about two thirds of the state of Ohio. Ohio was still a vast wilderness inhabited mostly by Indians and they made up a large portion of his parishioners. 'For four years he continued the great Methodist work of an itinerant, thoroughly imbued with the work of his Master, his horse a companion, his saddle-bags containing a bible and hymn book which served as a pillow at night behind some friendly log, as cabins were scarce those days when wild animals sounded the requiem at night. The Indians were friendly and honest, as he never broke a promise to them.' Benjamin served four years as an itinerant minister, then turned to medicine, which he practiced for about 50 years. He taught school in Georgetown during the winter of 1838 and General Ulysses S. Grant was one of his students. According to information in his obituary, Grant consulted Benjamin about whether he should go to West Point. Apparently Grant's father objected and wanted him to be a tanner instead. 'During the days of slavery . . . he was conspicuous as a member of the so-called Underground railroad in aiding the colored people to freedom across the state of Ohio with the motto that 'whatever duty dictateddo.'" - Benjamin S. Boydston obituary, Warsaw Daily Times Newspaper, Kosciusko County, Indiana, 30 October 1899, page 2 column 2.
