[57118] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 5 September 2011: "Bucksport - Eugene Webster Bowden, much loved husband, brother, father and grandfather, passed away Sept. 3, 2011, surrounded by his family at his home, after a recent courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 19, 1935, in Orrington, son of the late Ford and Nellie Bowden. Eugene attended Brewer schools and in his teenage years worked with his father doing road repair. He began working at St. Regis Paper Mill, Bucksport, in 1955, retiring as a well-respected foreman in 1997 after 42 years of service. Eugene also served in the Army National Guard. On July 16, 1953, Eugene married Esther Ames and shared a lifetime of special memories during the next 58 years together. He loved spending time with his family and was most proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eugene and Esther always enjoyed camping, with his favorite place being Prince Edward Island, where they spent several weeks every summer for the past 42 years, joined by all of their family for much of the time. They traveled throughout the Maritime Provinces in Canada, as well as other places in Maine and New Hampshire. Each fall they camped in the White Mountains, again shared with all of his family and many friends. Eugene and Esther took frequent drives along the coast, and Schoodic was another favorite place for walks and picnics. Eugene was a talented man of many skills, always eager to help others with home projects. He built his own home in 1962, helped build homes for each of his three sons, worked on his daughter's home projects and later did many projects and renovations for his grandchildren's homes. Eugene loved being part of his grandchildren's lives and attended many years of sporting events and school activities. He loved playing golf with friends and family. Eugene was a lifelong Red Sox fan. In addition to his loving wife, Eugene is survived by four children: sons, Stephen Bowden and wife, Jaunita, Mark Bowden and wife, Delores, Craig Bowden and wife, Corinne, and daughter, Jeanna Bjorn and husband, Preston; grandchildren, Jamie Bowden and wife, Amie, Shane Bowden and girlfriend, Ashley Radcliffe, Jared Bowden and girlfriend, Jena Jones, Brittany Bowden, Trevor Bowden, Jack Bjorn and Clark Bjorn; stepgrandchildren, Greg Burrill, Chris Burrill and wife, Lindsey, and Tyler Burrill; great-grandchildren, Paige and Peyton Bowden; and great-stepgrandchildren, Aiden Burrill and Jena's son, Liam Greenlaw. He was also "Gramps" to several Prince Edward Island family and friends. Eugene has one surviving brother, Wilfred Bowden and wife, Doris; and brothers-in-law, Philip Eckert, Russell Ames and wife, Kathy, and Robert Ames and wife, Lorre. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his infant son, Timothy Eric Bowden; one brother, Leslie Bowden; and one sister, Marguerite Eckert. Eugene was loved and admired by all and will be sadly missed by many special friends and family."
