[12960] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pmcbride/james/f023.htm#I1226X1 reports in 2003: "Robert (surnamed FitzParnel from his mother), 4th Earl of Leicester, succeeded his father in Messina in 1191, being invested by King Richard with the cincture of a sword. After which, while his master was detained in captivity by the emperor, the King of France having invaded Normandy, and taken divers places, this earl coming to Roan, excited the inhabitants to so vigorous a defense, that the French monarch was obliged to retreat. Furthermore, it is related of him, that making a pilgrimage into the Holy Land, he there unhorsed and slew the Soldan in a tournament, when returning into England, he died in 1204, and was buried at the abbey of Leicester. He had married Laureeta, daughter of William de Braose, Lord Braose, of Brember, but having no issue, the Earldom of Leicester became extinct, while his great inheritance devolved upon his two sisters as co-heirs."

"Arriving early in the wild forests of Maine, the Jordans suffered through bad weather, famine, and Indian attacks, as did the other settlers. The Indians did not like the Jordans, however, from the start (See Robert Jordan in this tree for details), and they liked his family no better.
"Dominicus Jordan took over the Cape Elizabeth properties after his father died. Then known as Spurwick, the 1,000 acres was remote, and at times the plantation was left idle due to the dangers. Jordan and his family took up permanent residence in 1698: for some of them, it was to be all too permanent. According to the Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, published in 1908 by William Richard Cutter,
"'Family tradition says that Dominicus Jordan was a man of large stature and of great strength and endurance; the gun used by him was more than six feet long, and it was the custom of the owner to keep the gun and ammunition close at hand all the time. The Indians feared him; in war he was their deadly enemy, but [he] lived in friendly terms with them in time of peace(667).'
"The gun was to be of little use.
"At the outbreak of the French-English wars in 1703, which are called the French-Indian Wars in the United States, the Indians' actions did not seem to be 'friendly'. Cutter continues.
"'...a party of Indians, appearing friendly, called on Mr. Jordan on August 10, to buy some goods. He did not suspect their treacherous design and was waiting on them, when one, who had watched the opportunity unnoticed, struck a hatchet into Mr. Jordan's head. Death soon followed. His wife and family of six children, and his youngest brother, Jeremiah, were made prisoners and led through the wilderness to Canada (ibid).'
"Dominicus' family were not the only casualties that day. According to Cutter, 22 people with the last name of Jordan were either killed or captured. Members of the family were to remain in captivity for 7 years: 6 with the Indians and 1 with the French. Samuel Jordan, one of Dominicus' sons, managed to escape with the help of an Indian woman. Although all were eventually ransomed, Dominicus' daughter Mary Anne refused to return home and opted to stay with the French. Her name was changed to Arabella, and is mentioned in Stoddard's Journal, dated 1713, as "Arabella Jordan, at Trois Rivers." In spite of her defection to the enemy, she was given her share of her father's estate in 1761. She married Solomon Meserve, evidently a Frenchman." - "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts," William Richard Cutter, 1908. [

An unverified Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2015 offers: "Dominicus Jordan was born on December 18, 1655, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, the child of Rev. Robert and Sarah. He married Hannah Tristram. They had one child during their marriage. He died on August 10, 1703, in his hometown, at the age of 47. Hannah Tristram was born on December 18, 1655, in Saco, Maine . . . . . She died in 1746 in Newbury, Massachusetts, at the impressive age of 91."

[1426] http://www.alnwickcastle.com states: "Henry, 3rd Earl of Northumberland (1455-1461) spent his whole life in warfare either against the Scots or the Yorkists. In 1456 he took part in a raid, assisted by Earl Douglas, into Berwickshire, which ended disastrously. In 1460 he fought at the Battle of Northampton where the Lancastrians were defeated and the King, Henry VI, was taken prisoner. The forces of the North rallied round Queen Margaret and in 1461 she was victorious at Wakefield and St. Albans, but was defeated at Mortimer's Cross. In the same year Edward IV proclaimed himself King and both sides made supreme efforts to obtain a decision. On March 28th the great Battle of Towton, the bloodiest battle ever fought on British soil, resulted in the decisive defeat of the Lancastrians. The Earl of Northumberland commanded the vanguard which, harassed by a blinding snowstorm and the enemy's arrows, received orders from him to charge, whereupon a fierce hand-to-hand conflict ensued. This ended in the complete rout of the attacking force. The Earl was among the 38,000 who are said to have fallen on that "evil Palm Sunday". After his death his estates were confiscated and the earldom bestowed on Lord Montagu, brother of Warwick the King-maker. In July 1461 Alnwick Castle capitulated to Lord Hastings. The extreme north of England now became the principal seat of war, as Henry had taken refuge in Scotland and the Lancastrians relied on the help of the Scots. In 1462 Queen Margaret entered Northumberland from Scotland and laid siege to Alnwick Castle, which was defended by Sir Ralph Grey of Wilton. It surrendered, either through treachery or want of provisions, and she proceeded to garrison it as well as Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Warkworth, with Englishmen, Scots and Frenchmen who had been sent to her aid by the French King. In December 1462 these castles were besieged by King Edward's forces under the Earl of Warwick. An army of 20,000 Scots marched to the relief of Alnwick, but on nearing one another both armies, equally anxious to avoid an encouter, withdrew. The garrison at Alnwick decided to accompany the retiring Scots and abandonded the Castle to Warwick, who took possession in 1463. In May however, the commander of the Yorkist garrison treacherously surrendered it to Henry VI. In 1464 Margaret again invaded Northumberland and was joined by many of the nothern leaders, including Sir Ralph Percy, brother of the late Earl. Their forces were, however, defeated at Hedgeley Moor on April 25th, where Ralph Percy was killed. This was followed in May by the complete defeat of the Lancastrians at Hexham, and on June 23rd Alnwick Castle again surrendered to Warwick. A few years of peace now ensued, but the increasing power and treasonable designs of Warwick and his faction rendered Edward IV uneasy and, as a counterpoise to the Warwick influence in the north, he decided to restore the young son of the 3rd Earl of Northumberland to his father's honours and estates. He had been seized and imprisoned in the Tower. He was freed in 1469 his estates restored to him. His formal restoration to the earldom took place in 1473."
