During his minority the empire was under the regency of his mother, Agnes of Poitou. He engaged in a long struggle with Hildebrand (Pope Gregory VII) over lay investiture, was excommunicated (1076), was absolved after humiliating himself at Canossa (1077), was again excommunicated (1080), deposed Pope Gregory (1084) and was crowned Emperor by "anti-Pope" Clement III (1084). He defeated Rudolph, Duke of Swabia (1078-80) and invaded Italy (1090). His last years were soured by the rebellion of his sons (1093-1105) - he was dethroned and imprisoned by his younger son Henry (1105) but he escaped.
