INDEX

[2593] Bohemond I (circa 1057-1111), prince of Antioch, leader of the First Crusade, and founder of a Crusader dynasty in Syria. The eldest son of Robert Guiscard, Norman duke of Apulia and Calabria in southern Italy, Bohemond distinguished himself in a war (1081-85) against the Byzantine Empire. After Robert Guiscard's death (1085), the Norman domain was divided between Bohemond and his brother. Bohemond joined the First Crusade to try to extend his possessions. As long as he remained with the Crusaders, Bohemond was their leader, although he was not officially recognized as such. Antioch was captured in June 1098, and Bohemond received it as a principality. He was captured by the Muslims in 1100 and held prisoner until 1103. After suffering a great defeat the following year, he returned to western Europe to seek help. During his stay in France, he married the daughter of King Philip I of France. By 1107 he was head of a large army of adventurers who had been attracted by his military renown, but instead of returning to Antioch, he led his forces against the Byzantine Empire, which had restricted the expansion of his principality after 1098. His attack was unsuccessful, and Bohemond was forced to accept a peace that made him a vassal of the Byzantine emperor. Bohemond's descendants ruled Antioch until 1268 and Tripoli from 1187 to 1289. Setton, ed., A History of the Crusades (University of Wisconsin); searchable text of the six-volume publication (1969-1989). Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemond_I_of_Antioch.

INDEX

[16347] David m. Mary Grant and had Michael, Jesse, David G., George, Mary and Margaret. In 1765 he moved to a mill in the valley of the Little Swatara Creek about 20 miles north of Shaefferstown - tradition reports that he had a grist mill in Berks Co. while Washington was at Valley Forge and that he supplied the American army with flour, was paid with Continental currency and went bankrupt. Find A Grave memorial 47249821 offers: "He was a miller by trade and followed his business for several years near Schaefferstown. He then moved to to the Swatara Valley above the Blue mountains in Berks County, about 20 miles north of Schaefferstown. Here he met a neighbor's daughter Mary Grant and they became married. His immediate area there became part of Pinegrove when it was organized in 1771. His name was written Brecht until 1783. In 1784 he moved to Greenbriar county, Va. where he did some farming until his death. SAR Patriot Burial records list his burial as Charles Evans so he may have returned from Virginia before his death. His will was written at Greenbriar County. His father Michael Bright, the elder, emigrated from the Palatinate, Germany, in 1726, arriving here at the age of 20 and settling near Schaefferstown. At that time there were but three counties in the Province of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Bucks and Chester. Schaefferstown was in Chester county when the elder Michael Bright(then written as Brecht) arrived, and was one of the oldest towns in the state. In 1729 Lancaster was established, and Schaefferstown was included with that county and later became Lebanon county."

INDEX

[3242] George and Denise also had Margery (4 Dec 1597), Mary (1608) and Elizabeth (2 Feb 1614). See "Lewisanna - The Lewis Letter", Vol VIII (May, 1898), p.168: "George Lewes, the ancestor of the Barnstable family came from East Greenwich in the County of Kent, England. He was by trade a clothier, and though called of East Greenwich, circumstances make it probable thathe was for a time a resident of London, and a member of Mr. Lathrop's church in 1632. George Lewes was admitted a freeman of the colony Jan. 14, 1636/7. His early admission shows that he was a man in good standing and had been known by the colonists before he came over. At that time there were few flocks of sheep in this colony, and in no town was there sufficient business to give employment to a clothier. Necessity compelled him to become a planter. Goodman Lewes was seldom employed in public business. In 1648 and 1650 he was surveyor of Highways, in 1649 a juryman, and in 1651 constable of the town of Barnstable. He wrote his name Lewes. On the colony records it is sometimes written Lewes, sometimes Lewis. His sons and grandsons spelled their names with two e's, and it is so uniformly written in the early town and church records. After 1700 some wrote the name Lewis and during the last century that has become the uniform orthography."
