[1662] The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle calls him "the deed-doer"; Florence of Worcester calls him "Edmundus magnificus"; "buried at Glastonbury, an abbey which he had entrusted in 943 to the famous Dunstan" {-Encycl.Brit., 1956 Ed., 7:962}. He reigned 940-946. He regained northern England and Strathclyde from the Vikings and gave Strathclyde to his ally Malcolm I MacDonald, King of Scots. Edmund I is known as a legal reformer, especially for his restrictions on the "blood feud." An outlaw, Leolf, stabbed him at a banquet in Pucklechurch on St. Augustine's Day. http://www.san.beck.org/AB17-FeudalEurope.html offers: "Athelstan died in 939 and was succeeded by his 18-year-old brother Edmund. Within a few weeks Dublin king Olaf Guthfrithson invaded and took over York before raiding the midlands. Edmund's army met his at Leicester, but the archbishops of Canterbury and York arranged a treaty giving Olaf the region between Watling Street and the Humber. The next year Olaf invaded Northumbria; but he died and was succeeded by his cousin Olaf Sihtricson, who lost the gained territory to Edmund in 942. The next year the Northumbrians chose Raegnald as king, and both he and Olaf were baptized at Edmund's court. When Olaf and Raegnald began fighting, Edmund expelled both with his army. A poem celebrated Edmund's victories in reconquering the five boroughs of Mercia and claimed that the loyal Danes were rescued from the Norse invaders. Next Edmund with Welsh allies invaded Strathclyde, where he had King Dunmail's two sons blinded. Edmund gave Strathclyde to the Scot king Malcolm (r. 942-952); but within a few years Dunmail was ruling again. Canterbury archbishop Oda (a Dane) urged the king to humanize his laws. Family feuds were prevented when Edmund's laws pronounced that a murderer's kinsmen could not be held liable if they did not support the crime, and revenge could only be taken on the killer himself. In 946 while trying to defend his steward, Edmund was stabbed to death by a criminal." Findagrave.com offers Mildred's obituary: "Mildred Dugan Murchison, 87, died at her daughter's home, Thursday, August 23, 2012, after a long illness. Born in Rockland, December 24, 1924, she was the daughter of Ernest H. and Lottie F. Demmons Grover. She attended Rockland schools. She began working at an early age in area seafood processing plants. In 1946 she married John O. Dugan. The couple made their home in Rockland where their five children were born. Mr. Dugan died March 27, 1960. In the early 1960s, she began working as a seamstress at Atlantic Sportswear in Rockland, where she worked several years as lead seamstress, supporting her family. In 1967, Mildred married Arthur Murchison of Lincoln. Mildred moved with her children to her husband's home in Lincoln, where they resided two years. Upon the closing of the Eastern Fine Paper Mill where Mr. Murchison worked, the Murchison family moved with their children to Montclair, California. Mr. Murchison died in 1981. Mildred remained in California, where she worked as a Property Manager, until moving back to Maine in 2000. She lived at the Knox Hotel Apartments in Thomaston, until moving to her daughter's home in March of this year. Her family and friends were Mildred's greatest joy. She loved going with them anywhere and anytime they went anywhere. She was a consummate shopper, but was ardently passionate at finding the best deal and never was shy to ask a merchant if that was the best price. For many years, she enjoyed making decorative pillows which she sold at swap meets and craft fairs. Mildred always took comfort and pleasure in caring for others, and when she worked as a property manger in California, often hosted what she called 'Happy Hours,' for less fortunate residents. Mildred will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Cheryl Dugan and her companion David Higley of Appleton; four sons, John O. Dugan and his wife Melody of Warren, Ernie 'Bub' Dugan, Henry Dugan and his companion Marji Feldpausch all of Owls Head, Stephen Dugan and his wife Mary Kay of California; her sister Betty Goodwin and her husband William of Norwich, Connecticut; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Ann George, John O. Dugan, Jr., Jennifer Dugan, Angie Dugan, Lincoln Whitney and Carrin, Arthur Whitney, Melissa Maxwell and Matthew, Stephen Dugan, Sean Dugan, Jeremy Lee Taylor-Farley; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, Bentley Whitney.
