Find A Grave memorial 129911490 offers James' obituary: "James Lowell was born January 31, 1956 to Lowell Henry and Gladys Mable (McVitty) Hoberland. The family were living on the northwest corner of South Center St. and Fremont St. in Zearing, Iowa. In August of 1969, James and his parents moved to El Monte Calif. In 1974 James graduated from El Monte High School. In the fall of 1974, James started working at the Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, DelMar and Pomona Racetracks picking up and dropping off the track judges at their designated post on the back side of the racetrack with 2 Hackney horses pulling a 2 seater buggy. When his father, Lowell, retired James took over his father's job,driving the 4 Hackney horse hitch hauling 4 track judges on the front side of the racetrack going in front of the Grandstand. On May 28, 1983 James married Carrie Roedler Tetzlaw at the Spanish Gardens Hotel in Duarte, CA. On July 23, 1986 their daughter Brandi Rae Hoberland was born. In 1987 James and his family bought a home outside of Phelan, CA. where they kept and raised horses and dogs. James was a loving kind hearted man. He grew his hair long and donated it to be made into wigs for children with cancer. The family was involved with Border Collie Rescue giving a temporary home to the homeless dogs. James's best friend, traveling companion and fishing buddy was a rescued Border Collie named Mopar. The family also gave temporary homes to old race horses. In 1996 James had a cameo scene in the movie Out to Sea starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. James' hobbies were racing and rock climbing with his radio controlled cars, cooking on the barbacue grill, fishing, camping, NASCAR races and the Denver Bronco's. At the age of 54, James retired in October 2010 after 35 years working at the Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, DelMar and Pomona Race Tracks in California. On January 19, 2014 James suffered a massive stroke. He passed away on March 3, 2014 at his home with loving care from his wife, Carrie, his friend Randy and Hospice. James was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ilo Jean Hoberland Cates, all his brother's in laws and two nephews, Rexford Lowell Hughes and Kevin Duane Perisho.
James is survived by his wife Carrie of Phelan, CA.; his daughter Brandi Rae of Riverside, CA., His sister's Peg Kinnetz of Iowa Falls, IA; Loretta Hughes of Ames, IA; his brother Dan and wife Rebecca Hoberland of Sharps Chapel, TN. Plus many nieces, nephews and cousins."
