[24441] NEHGR 1:171-2 provides his information, and states that his wife was Martha who d. in Dorchester, MA 23 Dec 1657 at age 60 - and reports "He was among the first Pilgrim emigrants to Massachusetts, and the first settlers of Dorchester. His place of residence was near Neponset Bridge, and he owned the land which has been known as 'Squantum.' He was made a freeman in 1634, and represented the town in 1635 and 1636. He was a ruling elder in the church thirty years . . . . He left a will, which is recorded in the Suffolk Records, Vol. VII, p. 189." James' web site reports:" Nicholas de Segrave, who, in the 43rd year of King Henry II, attended that monarch into France, but soon after espoused the cause of the barons, and became one of their most active leaders. In the 47th year of King Henry III's reign, he was among those who appeared openly in arms, and fortified Northampton, for which proceeding, his lands were seized by the crown. Upon the subsequent fall of Northampton to the royalists, Nicholas de Segrave fled to London, where the citizens having raised a large army for the barons, made him their general. At the head of this force, he marched with Gilbert de Clare, and Henry de Hastings, to the siege of Rochester, and thence to Lewes, at which place, the celebrated battle, so disastrous to the king, commenced, by a charge made by Segrave, at the head of the Londoners; in this, however, he was defeated by Prince Edward, who, flushed with success, pursued his advantage too far, and thus mainly contributed to the defeat which the royal arms sustained. The issue of this battle is well known. The king, Prince Edward, and the chief of their adherents became prisoners to the rebels, who followed up their triumph, by immediately summoning a parliament in the king's name, to which Nicholas de Segrave was summoned as Baron Segrave, on December 24, 1264. But the tide soon ebbing, he was among the defeated at Evesham, where he was wounded and made prisoner. He was, however, admitted to the benefit of the Dictum de Kenilworth, and obtained a full pardon, with restoration of his lands, which had been seized. In four years afterwards, he attended Prince Edward to the Holy Land, and when that prince ascended the throne, he appears to have enjoyed a large share of royal favor. In the 4th year of Edward's reign, he was with the king in a campaign against the Welsh, and was subsequently employed in Scotland and Ireland, having had a second summons to parliament, June 25, 1295. [6417] Katherine's obituary in the Bangor Daily News 7 April 2006: "DOVER-FOXCROFT - Katherine A. (Wingate) Nuite, 98, died peacefully April 5, 2006, with family members at her side. She was born Aug. 13, 1907, in Sebec, the daughter of George C. and Ida (Morgrage) Wingate. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy and the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn. After teaching commercial subjects at the Maine School of Commerce, Foxcroft Academy and Newport High School, she went to Washington D.C. in 1931, where she worked in the Interior Department. After two years she had seen and done what she wanted, so she returned home to marry Doran L. Nuite of South Sangerville and spent the remainder of her life there. A lifelong Grange member, she served as secretary of South Sangerville Grange for 52 years. She was a member of the Piscataquis Extension Service and an active 4-H mother. In 1960 she was named one of the two Outstanding Homemakers in the State of Maine, an honor that recognized her skills not only as a homemaker, but as a partner running a successful dairy and poultry farm. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Susie Carr Chapter and served on the school board in Guilford. Her strength of character and steadfast commitment to duty was shown by her devotion to the well being of her family and the interests of her community. In addition to being the wife of the late Doran L. Nuite (1973); she was also mother of the late Bradley W. Nuite (2004), Graham L. Nuite and Wilson G. Nuite of Sangerville, and Barbara N. Lockwood of Dover-Foxcroft; mother-in-law of David B. Lockwood of Dover-Foxcroft and Sally W. Nuite of Sangerville; grandmother of Lewis B. Nuite of Atkinson, George P. Nuite, Blaine C. Nuite, Warren W. Nuite and Barrett H. Nuite, all of Sangerville, Melynn Nuite of Salem, Mass., Maradee K. Jacoby of Blanchardville, Wis., Brenda E. Nuite of Neenah, Wis., Janice Bills of Dexter, Brian N. Lockwood of Apex, N.C., Amanda L. Maddocks of Raleigh, N.C.; great-grandmother of 15 and great-great-grandmother of one. Appreciation is extended to Delores Kelley and Janet Hobson in assisting with dedicated and compassionate care. There will be a graveside memorial service 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Bailey Cemetery in Sangerville." A photo of Katherine was published beside the obituary.
